Laboratory Technician

School of Veterinary Medicine – University of Surrey

Join us as a Laboratory Technician within the Veterinary Medicine School at the University of Surrey. You’ll play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of teaching laboratories, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students, and maintaining a safe, compliant working environment.


About the Role

This hands-on and dynamic position focuses on the technical preparation and delivery of UG veterinary medicine classes, safe use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and ensuring top-tier support for teaching and research activities.

Collaborating with Senior Technicians, Academic Staff, and colleagues, you’ll assist in delivering practical teaching sessions while adhering to strict Health & Safety regulations.


Key Responsibilities

Teaching Support & Laboratory Operations

-Prepare and deliver materials for undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes, providing technical support throughout sessions. -Work closely with the Senior Teaching Technician to ensure all equipment is functional and sessions run smoothly. -Endorse professional, high-standard research support in collaboration with your line manager.

Procurement & Experimental Design

-Liasise with academic and technical staff to source materials, support experimental work, and manage consumable stock control and ordering.

Technical Training & Guidance

-Provide technical training and hands-on support to staff and students on laboratory techniques, specialised equipment, and best practices. -Conduct inductions for new teaching staff and offer session-specific technical assistance.

Daily Laboratory Management

-Assist in the routine operation of teaching labs, Research Labs, and the Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL), including involvement with live companion animals where necessary.

Compliance & Safety

-Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing Health & Safety regulations, including:

  • Electrical safety testing
  • CoSHH (COSHH) compliance
  • Proper waste disposal procedures

Outreach & Engagement

-Engage in demonstrations, workshops, and outreach events, such as:

  • Open Days
  • Applicant Days
  • Widening Participation initiatives
