Laboratory Test Engineer (m/f/*)

Equipment Technician – Respiratory Protective Equipment Testing

Location: 3M UK, Newton Aycliffe Office Working Pattern: Full-time, Office-based


About the Role

At 3M, innovation drives our mission to solve challenges and improve lives. As an Equipment Technician, you’ll apply your expertise to enhance the testing of respiratory protective products, ensuring compliance with European standards while developing state-of-the-art solutions.

This role ensures our ISO 9001-certified quality management system and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation are met through meticulous equipment management, method development, and hands-on technical leadership.


The Impact You’ll Make

You will play a critical role in:

  • Ensuring compliance with EN respiratory product standards by validating and calibrating lab equipment.
  • Optimising testing accuracy and efficiency through method development and validation.
  • Mentoring laboratory personnel to ensure skill alignment with evolving best practices.
  • Collaborating with suppliers, engineers, and quality teams to enhance the laboratory’s operational integrity.

Your work will directly contribute to safety, innovation, and adherence to global regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Review EN respiratory product standards to determine required test equipment and specifications.
  • Specify and procure laboratory tools, ensuring alignment with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Prepare User Requirement Specifications (URS) for procurement of complex/high-value equipment.
  • Install, commission, and verify new instruments while documenting processes for compliance.
  • Develop, validate, and maintain test protocols in compliance with EN standards.
  • Train technicians in equipment operation, troubleshooting, and standard procedures.
  • Categorise and preventative maintenance, including calibration planning and record-keeping.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and quality managers to improve testing capabilities.

Quality & Compliance Assurance

  • Ensure all equipment and methods are auditable against ISO 17025 accreditation.
  • Maintain calibration, maintenance, and servicing documentation for traceability.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives, identifying inefficiencies or automation opportunities.

Your Skills & Expertise

Minimum Requirements

  • Technical qualification (HNC/HND, degree, or equivalents) in:
    • Engineering
    • Physics
    • Instrumentation
    • Related discipline with laboratory experience
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Laboratory or test equipment
    • Interpreting technical standards

  • Expertise in respiratory testing products or EN standards
  • Experience developing test methods and certifications
  • URS preparation and vendor collaboration
  • Knowledgeable in ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 environments
