Labourer – Social Housing & Domestic Properties
About the Role
We’re hiring a qualified Labourer with the opportunity to work locally within your community, supporting Places for People—one of the UK’s largest housing providers and a Top 50 Best Workplace. You’ll work directly within occupied and empty (void) homes, ensuring homes are safe, functional, and habitable while maintaining high standards of health, safety, and customer service.

What You’ll Be Doing
This role requires a hands-on approach to repairs, maintenance, and general labour tasks, supporting our customers’ homes while collaborating with tradespeople and supervisors. Your key responsibilities include:
- Carrying out a range of general domestic repairs (internal and external)
- Fixing drywall cracks
- Assembling furniture/joinery
- Tackling painting/tiling tasks
- Basic plumbing assistance (gauge flows, leaks, or fixture repairs)
- Supporting multiple trades (joinery, roofing, painting, roofing, plumbing, and tiling) where required
- Ensuring all work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards
- Travelling efficiently between jobs on the company van to maintain continuity
- Completing detailed work logs and documentation as required
- Engaging directly with customers in homes (focusing on vulnerable groups)
- Adapting to a structured weekday schedule with minimal overtime (unless agreed)

Essential Criteria (Required)
To be shortlisted for this role, you must meet:
- NVQ Level 2 or City & Guilds qualification in a relevant trade (trade-specific certifications help)
- Experience as a Labourer (preferably in social housing or domestic properties)
- Full UK driving licence (valid for travel across the NR postcode area)
- Note: Due to the dedicated local patch, you must be based within the NR postcode
- Willingness to work across environments involving vulnerable customers with safeguarding diligence
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting multiple trades (joinery, tiling, plumbing, etc.)
- Additional relevant trade qualifications
What Your Day Looks Like
Expect a mix of the following as part of your routine schedule:
- Arriving at work by 08:00 and checking your scheduled jobs
- Travelling to your first site via company van (match fuel card included)
- Working independently or as part of a team to complete:
- Small repairs (e.g. replacing wicked handles, fixing window seals)
- Maintenance (e.g. pressure testing taps, securing floorboards)
- Landscaping/clearing (e.g. emptying bins, managing communal gardens for void properties)
- Engaging with both users of homes and empty property teams for inspections/maintenance
- Following clear work plans while leaving homes safe, accessible, and compliant with health/safety regulations
- Returning detailed logs for client records
