Salary & Progression

Salary: £57,815 - £65,021 pa, with potential to progress to £73,211 pa via the pay progression scheme.

Location & Working Arrangements

Contracted to debut at:

  • Wilmslow, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, or Belfast office
  • Full flexibility for home or office-based work
  • Expected office attendance for collaboration or business travel when required

Job Description

The ICO stands at a pivotal moment, reflecting reframed expectations through the Data (Use and Access) Act and a new corporate strategy. The ICO Legal Service, especially within the Data Privacy Advice team, will play a key role in delivering strategic ambitions focused on high-profile privacy and cyber matters.

As a Lawyer in the Data Privacy Advice team, you will:

  • Provide risk-based legal advice under the UK GDPR, DPA 2018, FOIA 2000, PECR 2003, and NIS 2018.
  • Collaborate with internal/external stakeholders, following directions from Executive Team and senior legal leadership while reporting to the General Counsel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver timely, high-quality legal advice across the ICO on legal queries/briefs.
  • Craft strategic advice for decision-makers, considering key issues and priorities.
  • Manage complex caseloads, ensuring alignment with ICO standards, policy, and regulatory priorities.
  • Verify that published guidance remains legally accurate and up to date.
  • Liaise with case officers, stakeholders, and project teams, prescribing solutions to legal matters.
  • Ensure professional representation at and represent. Submitting professional statements where appropriate.
  • Contribute to in-house training efforts and lead training materials as needed.
  • Oversee legal workflow and standards in support functions.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria (Assessed at Application)

  • Must be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England & Wales.
  • If qualified outside England & Wales, applicants must possess an equivalent qualification and commit to SQE exams (or exemption) within a prescribed period.
  • Working current practising certificate or sufficient entitlement to obtain it from the Law Society/Bar Council.
  • Demonstrated public law experience or the ability to quickly develop relevant expertise.
  • Proven stakeholder liaison experience including ability to instruct external lawyers.

  • Strong ability to interpret/assess legislation and impact advice with speed.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and ability to reason soundly on legal matters.
  • Workload management skills, evidently thriving in pressurised environments.
  • Vigilance for ICO’s regulatory environment and public sector principles.
  • Clear demonstration of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion commitment.
