Layout Metrologist
Senior Process Metallurgist/R&D Engineer (Engineering and Design Innovation, Menden Hall)
Responsibilities
The purpose of this role is to develop and implement measurement strategies to produce technical dimensional inspection reports for both internal and external customers, while ensuring all onsite measurement equipment is regularly inspected and calibrated for production capability.
Main Responsibilities
- Perform dimensional inspection of products and tooling.
- Produce FAI (First Article Inspection) reports.
- Support part-engineering teams in interpreting technical drawings and technical specifications.
- Program automated inspection equipment, including:
- Coordinate Measuring Machines (Renishaw MODUS)
- Structured light systems (GOM / Zeiss ATOS equipment)
- Apply first-principles inspection methods and utilise standard measurement equipment.
- Use CAD software to:
- Interrogate models.
- Design part-marking templates and fixturing for inspection.
- Conduct dimensional calibration of measurement equipment.
- Liaise regularly with internal customers.
- Attend training courses to remain up-to-date.
- Assisting in resolving inconsistencies in specification interpretation.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering / Automation / Metrology or a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering.
- At least three years’ relevant technical experience in an engineering environment.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) features.
- Understanding of aerofoil inspection and specialised terminology.
- Strong problem-solving ability in addressing technical challenges.

- Superior organizational and planning skills for structured workflows.
- Ability to write and prepare technical documentation with precision.
- Flexibility to work independently or as part of a team.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including technical explanations and presentations.
- High level of computer literacy (proficient in Word / Excel / PowerPoint).
- Awareness of health and safety protocols.
- Demonstrated credibility, integrity, and ethical standards.
- Strong decision-making judgement—especially in high-stakes technical contexts.
- Pro-active and driven, with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Compliance with all company policies, including Conduct and Health & Safety standards.

Desirable Skills
- Previous Metrology experience.
- Expertise in automation systems.
- Advanced proficiency in CAD (Siemens NX preferred).
- CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) Programming Experience (Renishaw Modus preferred).
- Knowledge of MSA studies / R&R Analysis (Measurement System Analysis).
- Experience with Rolls-Royce FAI processes.
- Knowledge of non-contact measurement systems (GOM / Zeiss preferred).
- Experience with 3D printer setup and usage.
