Lead Automation Engineer

Location: Nailsea

Contract Duration: 12 months

About the Role

As a Lead Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading the execution of software projects within the subsea control and production systems department.
  • Developing and maintaining PLC and SCADA applications, including:
    • Creating functions from scratch
    • Troubleshooting
    • Source control
    • Ensuring code quality through best practices
  • Reporting project progress and resource status regularly, with technical input to and review of project plans, as required.
  • Collaborating with the global team to ensure unit engineering aligns with contract specifications and local regulatory requirements.
  • Taking ownership of key control systems engineering deliverables, including:
    • System Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
    • Software Requirements Specifications
    • Software Design Documents
    • System test procedures
  • Preparing and reviewing:
    • Project Requirements and Design Specifications
    • Software Products Requirements, Design, and Interface Specifications
    • Test Requirements for specific software applications/units, adhering to defined Codes of Practice.
  • Reviewing solutions to promote cross-project standardisation and engineering resource optimisation.

To excel in this role, you must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a Science-based discipline, or have equivalent knowledge/experience.
  • Have over 5 years of automation experience, with a specific focus on:
    • PLC development
    • HMI/SCADA technologies (ideally experience with Twincat Soft PLC and Ignition SCADA)
  • Deep expertise in industrial protocols, such as:
    • Modbus TCP
    • CAN
    • Ethernet UDP
    • OPC UA
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design methodology.
  • Strong understanding of software methodologies and development processes, with an ability to drive process improvements and uphold quality.
  • Experience using analytical tools to enhance product/offering development.
  • Prioritised experience delivering small-scale projects.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including:
    • Report writing
    • Presentation skills
    • Knowledge sharing capabilities
  • Willingness to travel to and work at assigned sites as required by the company.
