About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Backend Developer with expertise in Laravel to join a forward-thinking SaaS business operating within the UK Energy sector. This role offers a unique opportunity to take full ownership of a complex, multi-tenant Laravel platform that is actively used in a live environment. As a key member of a small, dynamic team, you will have the autonomy to influence the system’s architecture, standards, and strategic direction. The position provides a clear pathway towards senior technical leadership, with the potential for significant career growth and equity participation based on impact and performance.
The company’s platform manages critical property data, thermodynamic calculations, compliance, and project delivery. It features a microservices architecture with domain-heavy calculation engines and multiple external data integrations. The work involves complex challenges such as ensuring data isolation, maintaining shared logic across services, and guaranteeing calculation accuracy within interconnected models. This is a hands-on, ownership-driven role where you will shape the backend’s evolution, optimize service communication, and oversee system updates, all within a collaborative environment focused on innovation and excellence.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
