What you would do as our Lead Backend Engineer

Biosite provides biometric access control and workforce management software solutions for the construction industry and Biosite is expanding the team and is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to support its growth journey. Joining the R&D team, the Lead Backend Engineer, reporting directly to the Head of Software, will play an essential role in R&D to drive profitable and sustainable growth, whilst upholding company values.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Backend Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be an expert in C++, with a passion for building scalable, high-quality applications. The Lead Backend Engineer will be responsible for leading the development of the backend stack, ensuring best practices are followed, and collaborate closely with front-end engineers and the Product team to deliver highly efficient systems.

You would also:

  • Collaborate with product managers, architects, and other stakeholders to define technical requirements and design, develop, and maintain backend systems that power our access control and security solutions.
  • Evaluate, develop, and implement AI-powered tools and solutions to enhance products, engineering productivity, and operational efficiency and optimize performance, scalability, and reliability of our APIs and services.
  • Stay current with emerging AI technologies and provide technical leadership on the adoption of AI best practices across the team and participate in API design discussions and contribute to the evolution of our platform.
  • Lead and assist a team of backend engineers, fostering a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture and own technical delivery for backend projects, ensuring work is well-planned, tracked, and delivered on time.
  • Facilitate sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives in collaboration with product and delivery teams and identify bottlenecks, optimize database queries, and improve system efficiency, write unit tests, participate in code reviews and collaborate with QA engineers to ensure high-quality software releases.

The skills and experience you need

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and has proven experience as a Lead Backend Engineer or similar role.
  • Has strong proficiency in C++, with fair knowledge of the language specification and thorough knowledge of the standard library, STL containers, and algorithms.
  • Has experience developing, integrating, or deploying AI/ML-powered solutions and is familiar with Large Language Models (LLMs), AI-assisted development tools, and modern AI frameworks.
  • Has understanding of AI system architecture, prompt engineering, vector databases, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and AI service integration and has experience evaluating
  • Has knowledge of database systems and excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude.

  • Flexible hours, 37.5 hours a week with core hours between 10am and 4pm (GMT/BST).
  • 24 days leave, increasing 1 day/year after 2 years of employment.
  • The role is hybrid with at least 2-3 days per week expected at our modern purpose-built offices in Solihull, UK.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • 10% time available to work on your own projects and ideas.
