About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Backend Developer with expertise in Laravel to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to take full ownership of a complex Laravel-based microservices platform within a rapidly growing SaaS environment. The successful candidate will work closely with a small, focused team to shape the architecture, standards, and future development of the platform, directly influencing its technical direction and scalability. This position is ideal for a senior backend engineer seeking a challenge that combines technical leadership with hands-on development, providing a clear pathway into senior technical management. The role is based in London with a hybrid working model, requiring presence in the office approximately one day per week, offering flexibility for the rest of the time.
The platform itself serves the UK Energy sector, managing property data, thermodynamic calculations, compliance, and project delivery. It is a multi-tenant Laravel microservices architecture with a domain-heavy calculation engine and multiple external data integrations. The system handles complex data isolation, shared logic across services, and maintains high accuracy within interconnected calculation models. As part of this role, you will be responsible for evolving the backend, ensuring seamless service communication, and managing deployment strategies. The position offers significant scope for growth as the business expands, with opportunities for increased seniority and equity participation based on impact and performance.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess over 5 years of experience working with Laravel in complex backend or SaaS systems. Strong knowledge of multi-tenant architecture, shared packages, and distributed systems is essential. A solid understanding of OAuth 2.1, identity management, and backend security protocols is required to ensure robust and secure application development. Experience working with cloud services such as AWS—including EC2, RDS, and S3—is important, along with familiarity with containerization tools like Docker and CI/CD pipelines. Knowledge of Laravel Forge or Vapor is advantageous. Additionally, experience with Elasticsearch, asynchronous processing pipelines, and event-driven system design will be highly beneficial. The candidate should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive approach to development, and the ability to lead technical initiatives effectively.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and ongoing maintenance of a Laravel microservices platform used in a live SaaS environment, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
- Build and sustain a multi-tenant architecture with strong data isolation to support diverse client requirements.
- Extend and optimize a scientific calculation engine that demands high precision and accuracy.
- Implement and manage asynchronous workflows utilizing queues, Redis pub/sub, and event-driven architectures to enhance system performance and responsiveness.
- Develop integrations with external APIs and data sources, ensuring seamless data flow and consistency across platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements, establish best practices, and implement scalable solutions.
- Maintain a focus on continuous improvement, code quality, and system robustness.
- Participate in deployment processes, leveraging CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure to facilitate smooth rollouts and updates.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to technical documentation to support ongoing team growth and knowledge sharing.
