Lead Cloud Platform Engineer- i.AI
#Leveraging AI Platform Engineering Expertise Location: Bristol, London, Manchester
Job Summary
Incubator for AI, i.AI Help build the cloud platform behind some of the most ambitious AI products in government.
This is not a conventional platform engineering role.
At i.AI, you will develop the cloud platform enabling teams to deliver frontier AI products into effective public services. Your contributions will establish foundational capabilities allowing AI systems to move from concept to production securely, reliably and at scale.
You’ll join a highly capable engineering team with a flat structure, strong technical standards, and a substantial degree of operational autonomy. This is an environment for engineers passionate about solving complex problems, influencing architecture, improving software delivery practices, and working on technology with real-world impact beyond the organisation.

About the Role
We seek a Lead Cloud Platform Engineer to:
- Design, build, and operate a production-grade AI platform.
- Combine deployment-to-production hands-on technical expertise with leadership across architecture, security, software engineering, and AI-specific platform challenges.
- Operate as an experienced "T-shaped engineer"—prioritising both depth in cloud engineering and the ability to bridge disciplines.
Your impactful work will set how platform capabilities are built, adopted, and evolved. You will lead through technical credibility, not hierarchy:
- Mentor developers.
- Enable engineering best practices through validation and mentorship.
- Guide teams by raising the overall bar for technical maturity, efficiency, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering
- Build and operate cloud infrastructure components from concept to production – interpret ambiguous requirements into scalable, secure architectures, and deliver dependable API Touters/Libraries.
- Successfully establish self-service governance and automation across platforms, teams, and accommodating new technologies (e.g., AI models delivering inference image generation, generation summarisation).
- Define inclusive workflows supporting environments, pipelines, observability, and operation-first patterns that allow teams to ship faster with minimal friction.
AI Driven Platform Capabilities
- Evaluate MLOps tools for integrating knowledge sharing,
- Provision and secure streamlined access to diverse AI agents directly through an internal summarisation API.
- Enable AI workloads (trained AI systems with medical safety-corners, complexity, or compute environments)
- Develop best practices for model routing, custom inference metrics, tracing, evaluation and performance cost trade-offs.
Technical Leadership and Collaboration
- Advocate and practice security in architecture’s life-cycle, introducing GenAI for streaming.
- Graphical accounts profile reviews, deploying guardrails that improve flat’s existing workflows.
- Be an opinionated actuator shaping trusted technical mentors
- Support intermediate agent scoring, translating measurement for various ML developers.
- Broaden foundational AI tool adoption and adaptability, shaping them to meet diverse team objectives.
