WDSL is a leading supplier of high specification integrated maritime propulsion shaft line solutions and a manufacturer of high specification shaft line components. Our solutions are trusted by over 70 navies globally.
We are now looking for a Lead CNC Machinist to join our team working for a better future.
This role is based in Havant, Portsmouth, UK, and requires working weekend day shifts.
What you will be doing
Operation and programming of 5 Axis CNC Machining Centres for the manufacture of high precision, high quality, and low volume machined parts used in the assembly of critical system supplied to the maritime industry.
As Lead CNC Machinist, your work will focus on these responsibilities:
- Responsible for Machining of parts on 5 Axis CNC Machining Centres
- Stropping, lifting and loading materials (use of slings and overhead cranes)
- Working to engineering drawings and creating and modifying CNC programmes
- Lead program and process improvement activities to improve quality and reduce cycle time
- Support tooling and fixturing set-up, design, and trials
- Lead CNC program prove-out and 1st off activities
- Parts measurement and inspection activities
- Train, support and coach other machine operators
- Ensuring product quality and conformance to specification
- Perform machine TPM activities and ensure good area housekeeping
- Work safely in line with the companies Health and Safety policy

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:
- HNC/ HND
- Operation of Mazak CNC 5 Axis Machine Centres
- Experience of creating and modifying CNC Programmes using Mazatrol
- Understand Health & Safety environment/procedures
- Working from Engineering drawings
- Use of measuring equipment including verniers, stick mic's & probes
- Setup and machining of castings; using dial indicators and probes
- Manual Handling, slinging and lifting, and use of cranes
- Train, coach and supporting other machinists
Desirable experience would include:
- 5 years (min) Engineering experience within the manufacturing industry
- 5 years (min) CNC Programming knowledge
- Modern Tool Cutting knowledge
- CAM experience (Mastercam & Edgecam)
- CI experience (Lean 7 wastes)
- Safety / 5S work ethic
- Computer Literate (Microsoft)
- Manual Handling, slinging and lifting, and use of cranes up to 3T
