Lead Control & Automation Systems Engineer

The Team & Location

This role is based within GE Vernova's High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Centre of Excellence in Stafford, working as part of an international team within the global grid integration function. You'll thrive in a dynamic, flexible working environment that values autonomy and individual contributions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

Lead the design, delivery, and deployment of some of the world’s most complex power control systems. Your expertise will help shape live projects, ensuring live power flow while pushing the boundaries of energy grid technology.

Core Duties

  • Own the full lifecycle of HVDC Control & Protection systems:
    • Define requirements & specifications
    • Configure, test, and commission systems in collaboration with teams
    • Witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)
  • IEC 61850 Specialisation:
    • Lead configuration and validation of IEDs using vendor tools and System Configuration Tools (SCT)
    • Generate Substation Configuration Description Language (SCL) files
    • Test, debug, and refine communication protocols using tools like IEDScout and Wireshark
  • Substation Automation & Integration:
    • Oversee connections between control systems and Balance of Plant (BoP) equipment and SCADA/Supervisory systems
    • Design LAN, industrial Ethernet, and communication architectures
    • Configure essential equipment such as:
      • Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
      • Bay Control Units (BCUs)
      • Merging Units
  • Technical Documentation:
    • Create detailed I/O lists, signal interface analyses, and documentation including:
      • Electrical schematics
      • Wire & cable schedules
      • Routine test specifications
      • Final assembly drawings
      • Bills of Materials (BoMs)
  • People & Process Leadership:
    • Mentor and develop team members
    • Standardise design processes globally
    • Review deliverables
    • Drive improvements in delivery efficiency, system reliability, and stability

Requirements

Required Competencies

  • Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in control and protection systems design for power/ substation environments, with a strong foundation in digital substation automation.
  • Demonstrable expertise configuring:
    • Bay Control Units
    • Merging Units
    • IEC 61850 IEDs
    • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
    • SCADA systems
  • Proficient knowledge of industrial communication networks, including:
    • IEC 61850
    • Ethernet-based protocols
    • Layer 2 & Layer 3 protocols:
      • IPV4
      • OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)
      • LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol)
      • DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) configurations
      • VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)
      • DNP3
      • Modbus
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles for industrial networks, including hardening techniques and best practices.

Preferred Competencies

  • Proven record of technical leadership in high-complexity engineering settings, with the ability to shoot independent technical decisions and collaborate effectively with subject matter experts.
  • Track record of delivering systems that meet design requirements, cost targets, and reliability standards.
  • Experience integrating Distribution Management Systems (DMS/ADMS) in HVDC or substation control environments.
