Overall Purpose of The Job

The Lead Data Engineer is a hands-on player-coach who supports the existing Head of Data and acts as the senior technical anchor for data engineering — fulfilling an existing ask within the team. You will own architectural decisions and standards while building and shipping data pipelines yourself, working within the data team to deliver, and partnering with the squads on the data approaches they need as ShipSure scales.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Standards

  • Own data engineering architectural decisions and technical standards across ShipSure.
  • Design scalable, reliable data pipelines and platforms across ingestion, transformation, storage and serving.
  • Establish best practice for data quality, lineage, observability and security.

Hands-On Delivery & Technical Leadership

  • Work as a player-coach — designing, building, testing and shipping data pipelines and models yourself alongside the data team, not only directing others.
  • Support the Head of Data on technical strategy and delivery, and set the technical bar through your own hands-on work.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership — including design, code review and pairing — and guide engineers as the team scales.

Delivery

  • Partner with the Data & Dashboards Product Manager and Product Owner to build and deliver data-as-a-product capabilities.
  • Embed with engineering squads to define and implement the data approaches they need, while personally delivering core data platform work within the data team.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Senior, still-hands-on data engineering experience, with ownership of architecture and technical standards.
  • Strong command of the modern data stack (pipelines/ETL, warehouse or lakehouse, SQL, Python, orchestration).
  • Experience establishing data quality, lineage and governance practices.
  • A genuine player-coach — you still design and write code daily — able to provide technical leadership and guide other engineers.
  • Comfortable in a hybrid internal / outsourced delivery model.
