👀 The Role

Title: Lead Data Engineer

Team: Data

Location: UK preferred; remote-friendly

Salary: £120k, with flexibility up to £130k for the right candidate

We’re looking for a Lead Data Engineer to drive the next phase of our data platform strategy at Midnite. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you’ll set direction, own the design and scalability of our data infrastructure, and help build the platform that enables analysts and stakeholders to self-serve.

We’re looking for a software-engineering-first data platform leader: someone with strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to mentor others while remaining hands-on.

You’ll work across the full data lifecycle from ingestion and modelling to orchestration, monitoring, and analytics enablement. You’ll help us make scalable technical decisions, support multi-territory expansion, improve platform reliability, and move the business toward lower-latency insights where it matters most.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Our Tech Stack

Snowflake, Apache Iceberg, Python, Docker, Dagster, dbt, Terraform, AWS, and Omni.

We have a modern stack overall and welcome input from engineering leaders on how we can improve scalability, reliability, and efficiency.

You will:

  • Partner with the Head of Data to own the technical strategy for data engineering, ensuring our stack scales with the business.
  • Design, maintain, and evolve robust data pipelines and architecture to support reliable analytics and lower-latency opportunities over time.
  • Build a platform that enables analysts to self-serve and stakeholders to make better decisions.
  • Help shape repeatable architecture for multi-territory expansion.
  • Oversee the implementation of data models and frameworks that support analytics and business intelligence.
  • Drive engineering best practices across testing, monitoring, version control, automation, and pragmatic design.
  • Lead code reviews, raise quality standards, and ensure technical debt is managed proactively.
  • Mentor engineers, support career development, and provide lightweight people management while staying hands-on.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, introducing tools and methods that future-proof the data platform without overcomplicating it.

The next Midniter:

  • Is a software engineer first who has specialised in data/platform engineering.
  • Has strong software engineering fundamentals.
  • Has strong Python or equivalent production engineering capability.
  • Has SQL capability; Snowflake experience is a bonus, but engineering depth matters more than exact tool match.
  • Has data modelling and architecture breadth, and can explain trade-offs clearly.
  • Has experience with orchestration frameworks such as Dagster, Airflow, or Prefect.
  • Has hands-on experience with modern data warehouses/lakehouse patterns and cloud infrastructure.
  • Is comfortable with platform/infrastructure thinking across tools such as dbt, Docker, Terraform, AWS, Iceberg, or similar.
  • Is a hands-on leader: data engineer first, people manager second.
  • Thrives in a start-up/scale-up environment and brings a pragmatic, impact-focused mindset.
