Job Brief

The Lead Data Engineer role is responsible for owning the technical direction, design and delivery of data platforms and data engineering solutions for our clients, while providing leadership and guidance to data engineering teams.

As a senior member of a cross-functional delivery team, the Lead Data Engineer takes accountability for the end-to-end architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable and high-quality data solutions. This includes overseeing data pipelines, data warehousing, integration patterns and analytics enablement, ensuring that data platforms are robust, secure and aligned to business outcomes.

Acting as both a hands-on engineer and a technical leader, the Lead Data Engineer sets best practice, mentors engineers, and shapes ways of working to ensure consistently high standards of delivery. They work closely with client stakeholders, product managers, analysts and software engineers to translate business requirements into effective data solutions that support insight, reporting and decision-making.

As a consultant at Enablis, the Lead Data Engineer is fully customer-facing, building trusted relationships and providing clear technical direction. They are also supported by and contribute to Enablis’ engineering communities, helping to evolve shared standards, tooling and approaches across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and lead the technical architecture and delivery of data engineering solutions
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to Data Engineers within delivery teams
  • Design and oversee scalable data pipelines, data platforms and warehousing solutions
  • Act as a hands-on engineer on complex or high-risk components where required
  • Define and promote best practices for data quality, performance, security and governance
  • Collaborate closely with clients and stakeholders to shape data strategies and solutions
  • Ensure data platforms meet non-functional requirements such as reliability, scalability and maintainability
  • Shape engineering processes, tooling and ways of working within teams
  • Support engineers’ technical development and progression
  • Contribute to Enablis technical communities and quality forums

Key Skills

  • Strong experience designing and delivering scalable data engineering solutions
  • Expertise in cloud-based data platforms such as AWS (Redshift, Glue), Azure (Data Factory, Synapse) or GCP (BigQuery, Dataflow)
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, including optimisation and performance tuning
  • Strong experience with ETL / ELT pipelines and data transformation frameworks
  • Programming capability in Python, Scala or Java for data processing
  • Deep understanding of data warehousing concepts and best practices
  • Experience designing and maintaining reliable, production-grade data pipelines
  • Ability to take accountability for technical quality across a data engineering team
  • Strong stakeholder management and client-facing communication skills
  • Comfortable working in agile environments and shaping effective delivery practices
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to embrace complexity and uncertainty
  • High attention to detail and quality
