Lead Data Engineer
Salary: £92,701 - £109,060 Location: Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol Hours: Full-time (35 hours) Working Pattern: Hybrid, with a minimum of two days per week (40% of time) at an office site. Flexible arrangements supported for colleagues with disabilities, including adjustments to hybrid working expectations in line with Flexibility Works policy.
About the Role
At Lloyds Banking Group, we are transforming how we protect our customers, colleagues, and services in an increasingly complex threat landscape. The Security Data & AI Lab within the Chief Security Office is leading this change by designing data platforms and AI-driven capabilities that enable proactive defence.
We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to shape and lead the lab’s data engineering capability. This is a senior role that blends deep technical expertise with leadership, influencing strategy, driving impactful outcomes, and shaping data engineering principles across our enterprise.
You will:
- Operate at the intersection of data engineering, security, and AI
- Define and drive the data engineering strategy and roadmap
- Own scalable data pipelines
- Embed secure-by-design principles
- Provide production-grade data foundations for AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics
- Partner across Security, Cloud, Architecture, and Product teams
- Mentor engineers and foster a high-performing engineering culture

What We’re Looking For
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven experience leading technical delivery and mentoring engineers in a senior or lead role
- Strong expertise in designing, building, and operating scalable data platforms and pipelines in complex environments
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native data platforms across Azure, AWS, GCP, or similar enterprise ecosystems
- Deep understanding of:
- Data modelling, data quality, metadata, lineage, and governance
- Pragmatic, risk-aware technical decision-making (balancing resilience, pace, and long-term sustainability)
- Experience embedding engineering best practices, including:
- CI/CD
- Automated testing
- Observability
- Version control
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, working effectively with engineering, security, data science, and product teams
Desirable Experience & Skills
It would be highly beneficial if you have:
- Direct exposure to MLOps or SMLOps tooling and model lifecycle management
- Experience with AI/ML pipelines, feature engineering, or analytics platforms
- Knowledge of AI governance and secure adoption of generative/agentic AI
- Relevant experience in security-focused or regulated environments
- Familiarity with event-driven or streaming data architectures
