The Role: Lead Data Products Engineer
About the Team
The Energy Products practice is seeking an experienced Lead Data Products Engineer to join their team.
Baringa leads in modelling energy markets, leveraging insights to drive change in the decarbonising energy industry. The practice specialises in the development and innovation of analytical models and data-driven technology ecosystems.
The team works across diverse industries, collaborating with teams in different regions to design and develop models that integrate with highly varied data sources—from academic papers to large-scale scenario projections.
We are establishing a Dedicated Data Products Team to curate, design, and evolve data products supporting modelling processes, analytics, and client-facing systems under the newly implemented Data and Processing Platform.

What You Will Be Responsible For
As the Lead Data Products Engineer, you will:
1. Lead and Design Data Products
- Define, design, and evolve data products in collaboration with Baringa subject-matter experts, ensuring alignment with our modelling processes and client needs
- Build a deep understanding of the data domain, identifying key sources, flows, and how outputs are used in systems to directly support demand

2. Build the Data Products and Processes
- Collaborate closely with the Platform Team to design and develop foundational data products on our new Data Platform
- Specialize in certain domain data products and associated processes, ensuring their quality, adoption, adoption, reliability, and evolution
3. Ensure Robust Data Governance and Contracts
- Create and formalise technical data contracts, including schemas, versioning strategy, data governance workflows, and API design principles
- Ensure backward compatibility and long-term governance of the data products
4. Provide Technical Leadership
- Shape technical decisions alongside the Product Owner, balancing commercial and strategic goals
- Enforce engineering best practices to embed quality, reliability, and observability from the start
5. Drive Agile Team Efficiency
- Actively contribute through scrum/kanban approaches to refine, plan, and deliver data products, continuously improving both products and processes
Your Skills and Experience
We’re looking for someone passionate about data and its applications, with deep curiosity to understand our domain and support the teams that rely on our data products.
Technical Competencies
- Senior or Lead Engineer Experience in designing, developing, and refining data products
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with both domain specialists and other engineers
- Strong problem-solving skills with adaptability in technology choices
- Proven Python expertise for both data engineering and applications, understanding domain modelling and software engineering
- Expertise in data management technologies like SQL, NoSQL, or Databricks
- Familiarity with modern software tools (Git, CI/CD pipelines), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and Data Lakehouse architectures
- Experience with data governance, focusing on data quality and working within data-mesh architectures
- Communication skills to simplify complex concepts for diverse audiences
Agile and Team Facilitation
- Hands-on experience with Agile principles (Scrum/Kanban)
- A contribution mindset to improving team processes
