Job Title: Lead Data Scientist
Salary: £66,079 - 82,599 dependant on experience
Location: Peterborough, On-Site, 5 Days per week

Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E+ES) Division will focus on delivering advanced electrified power train, zero-emissions products/technologies, and the solutions and services associated with these technologies. Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries.

The Opportunity
As a Data Scientist, you will be an integral part of our dedicated analytics team, focused on supporting the development of data-driven insights and tools that help Caterpillar and its customers navigate the energy transition. You will work with a range of stakeholders, including Business Development, Marketing, and Engineering teams, to analyse machine and operational data and contribute to the development of customer-focused analytics solutions.
This role provides an opportunity to apply data science skills to real-world challenges such as machine electrification, total cost of ownership (TCO), and operational optimisation. You will support the development of analytical models and tools that inform business decisions and enhance customer understanding. You will also benefit from exposure to Caterpillar’s global centres of excellence, with opportunities to collaborate and learn in areas such as DevOps, cloud platforms, containerisation, and emerging technologies including Generative AI.

What will you do
- Directing the data gathering, data mining, and data processing processes in huge volume; creating appropriate data models.
- Exploring, promoting, and implementing semantic data capabilities through Natural Language Processing, text analysis and machine learning techniques.
- Leading to define requirements and scope of data analyses; presenting and reporting possible business insights to management using data visualization technologies.
- Conducting research on data model optimization and algorithms to improve effectiveness and accuracy on data analyses.

- Business Statistics: Knowledge of the statistical tools, processes, and practices to describe business results in measurable scales; ability to use statistical tools and processes to assist in making business decisions.
- Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.
- Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
- Machine Learning: Knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; ability to develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services.
- Programming Languages: Knowledge of basic concepts and capabilities of programming; ability to use tools, techniques and platforms in order to write and modify programming languages.
- Query and Database Access Tools: Knowledge of data management systems; ability to use, support and access facilities for searching, extracting and formatting data for further use.
- Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
Requirements
- Experience in a Data Scientist or similar analytical role (or strong relevant academic experience).
- Good foundation in statistical analysis and data science techniques.
- Proficiency in Python and common data science libraries (NumPy, Pandas).
- Experience working with structured datasets; exposure to time-series or operational data is beneficial.
- Basic understanding of APIs or experience working with multiple data sources.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms or analytics environments (e.g. AWS, Snowflake) is desirable.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.

- Experience working in a team environment with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Interest in machine analytics, electrification, or energy systems.
- Experience creating data visualisations or dashboards.
- Familiarity with tools such as Jupyter Notebooks or similar environments.
- A proactive mindset and eagerness to develop new skills.
