About The Role
The Strategic Infrastructure (SI) business unit has been set up to deliver 17 new major projects in the UK, as well as other strategic projects to help us deliver on our net zero ambitions and help the UK Government meet its target of 50GW of renewable energy by 2030.
The Onshore Engineering team’s objective is to lead on Engineering Strategy and to provide technical expertise on the development and implementation of Transmission Assets, ensuring all projects meet with both internal and external specifications, meeting anticipated engineering and operational requirements.
A key part of the team’s objectives is to deliver Design Assurance using a progressive and risk-based approach, ensuring activities are undertaken in a timely manner, avoiding delays to project design and delivery. The role holder will be accountable for the Assurance of Design and Technical Assurance of Infrastructure build.
The Lead Design Engineer (LDE) will be responsible for managing a team of subject matter experts engaged in providing Design Assurance and Project Engineering support associated with Electricity Transmission Assets and Civils associated with Substation and Overhead Lines Infrastructure design and build. The LDE will hold overall responsibility for assuring design is compliant with National Grid technical standards, business procedures, supplier requirements, and specifications throughout the project life cycle (project inception to project completion and handover).
The LDE will report to the Engineering Manager within Strategic Infrastructure Design and Engineering team, with responsibilities across the full portfolio of projects. This role is pivotal to ensure a universal standard of assurance applied across the full portfolio.
This role is Variable Based. You will be expected to travel 2-3 times a week to multiple operational and delivery sites and locations throughout your working week based on project demands. Operational or delivery roles requiring attendance at multiple sites within a region. Occasional travel to office site in Birmingham.

- Significant, demonstrable technical experience in the area of specialism.
- Numerate degree or equivalent experience.
- Chartership or equivalent membership of a relevant professional body.

What You'll Do
- Act as a subject matter expert on the management of Design Assurance activities associated with Electricity Transmission design and build.
- Ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of assurance methodology.
- Inspire and influence both internal and external stakeholders to realize acceptable outcomes.
- Create and support the implementation of an engineering capability growth plan.
- Identify and drive innovation in line with the strategic direction.
- Lead and shape National Grid’s relationships with key external stakeholders where appropriate (e.g., regulators, professional bodies, suppliers, international engineering institutions, academic institutions).
- Establish and maintain a network of thought leaders to establish market trends and facilitate convergence of ideas as appropriate.
- Provide senior leadership advice and briefing.
- Manage a team of subject matter experts tasked with undertaking Assurance activities as well as providing Engineering support to the Project Delivery teams. Responsible for signing off SME’s Assurance packages as a TP141 authorized Engineer.
- Responsible for design assurance of multiple design packages and projects, from outline design through project completion, in one or multiple of the following areas (depending on experience): substation HV design, substation civil design, overhead line design, HV cable design, P&C design.
- Review Designer's technical design to ensure compliance with design specifications, and adherence to quality and assurance standards and procedures.
- Apply design knowledge to support project engineers with resolution of technical issues arising from assurance reviews as necessary.
- Oversee technical interfaces and assurance of these between packages and projects.
- Communicate between projects where lessons can be learned, and best practices can be shared to improve in design and technical areas.
- Be a primary contact for technical assurance guidance.
- Work as an intermediary between discipline Subject Matter Experts and project teams in technical and assurance matters.
What You'll Get
- A competitive salary between £66,000 - £81,000 – dependent on capability.
