We’re recruiting Lead Developers to support the development of reformed specifications. These roles are flexible, mostly remote.
About the Role
As the leading provider of GCSE and A Level qualifications—and an education charity—we’re committed to helping learners realise their potential. We’re now looking for educators to turn their classroom experience into national impact.
Responsibilities
The role involves:
- Contributing to the full assessment development process, ensuring alignment with curriculum requirements and best assessment design practices.
- Developing the specification in line with AQA assessment design principles and regulatory frameworks, grounded in a strong understanding of:
- Centre delivery contexts
- Learner diversity
- Contributing to shaping the overall assessment strategy.
- Reviewing and providing feedback on research and analysis outputs.
- Supporting developers in creating assessment materials, including:
- Question papers
- Mark schemes
- Item commentaries
- Supporting market testing and evaluation of:
- Sample assessment materials (SAMs)
- The wider customer support offering
- Developing the specification in line with AQA assessment design principles and regulatory frameworks, grounded in a strong understanding of:

The qualification development programme spans 18–24 months. While remote work will dominate the role, you’ll attend a mix of:
- Virtual and in-person meetings
- Approximately 10 in-person or hybrid meeting days over the project’s duration.
Requirements
For your personal statement, provide evidence of:

Substantial teaching experience in GCSE Physics:
- Typically involving years of classroom practice.
- Deep subject expertise.

Specification development and/or:
- Experience writing or reviewing questions.
- Experience in marking or moderating assessments.

Leadership and teamwork:
- Strong leadership skills with an ability to inspire and support teams.
- Consistent, positive engagement and team collaboration.

Time management and deadlines:
- Experience meeting deadlines while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to deliver high-quality work under strict timelines.

Regulatory and inclusivity awareness:
- Understanding of regulatory obligations in producing specifications.
- Commitment to inclusivity in assessment design.

Focus on quality and accuracy:
- Proven track record of error-free material creation.

Additional Information
- Contract type: Worker agreement (up to 50 weeks/year).
- Payment: Fee-based with a total expected between £4,000–£6,000.
- Payment for meeting attendance included.
- NB: Separate applications are required for each Lead Developer position.
