Lead Digital Engineer - Great Grid Partnership
Location
Birmingham – Work from our project hub in Birmingham, with travel required to regional Great Grid Partnership (GGP) project sites.
Role Overview
As a Lead Digital Engineer, you will be a key member of Laing O’Rourke’s Engineering Enterprise, driving technical excellence, assurance, and performance across project lifecycles. You will champion Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), Digital Engineering, and Early Engagement to maximise project outcomes.
You will be seconded to National Grid as the Senior Project Information Manager (SPIM) on the Great Grid Upgrade programme, supporting the Brinsworth to High Marnham (EDEU) project—a +£1bn infrastructure upgrade including substation replacements and ~70 km of overhead line upgrades.
While embedded with National Grid, you will remain part of Laing O’Rourke’s Digital Engineering community, contributing to knowledge sharing and long-term capability building.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery (SPIM)
- Lead Information Management across the project lifecycle
- Manage and maintain the BIM Execution Plan (BEP) and Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP)
- Drive adoption and compliance of the Common Data Environment (CDE)
- Coordinate BIM, GIS, and Document Control activities across delivery teams
- Support Package Information Managers in configuring and managing information workflows
- Align information exchange with National Grid systems (NGSI Onshore ACC)
- Assess team capability and deliver training to improve information delivery
- Identify and manage risks, opportunities, and assurance activities
- Collaborate with Digital Integrator and SPIM peers to improve processes and share best practices

Digital Leadership & Governance
- Embed National Grid’s Information Management Framework (EIR, IPMP, IS)
- Ensure consistent digital standards and governance across packages
- Manage BIM/GIS resources and strengthen digital capability across projects
Laing O’Rourke Responsibilities
- Promote digital best practice and improve digital literacy across teams
- Mentor and support the development of fellow Digital Engineering community members
- Collaborate across projects to drive consistency and innovation
- Support governance, quality assurance (QA), and effective digital resourcing
About You
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline
- BIM accreditation or chartership (preferred)
- Strong leadership experience in Digital Engineering / Information Management
Technical Capabilities
- Expertise in BIM and Information Management (BEPs, EIRs, MIDPs)
- Understanding of digital systems and integrated project environments
- Strong knowledge of construction processes and design documentation
