Lead HV Primary Plant Design Engineer
Location: Scotland (Remote Working UK Wide possible)
Salary: Up to £90,000 + benefits
A leading engineering contractor delivering major electricity transmission and renewable energy infrastructure projects is looking to appoint a Lead HV Primary Plant Design Engineer to support the continued growth of its UK engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys remaining technically hands-on while leading projects, mentoring engineers, and influencing how a growing engineering function develops.
Working across a diverse portfolio of transmission and substation projects, you'll take ownership of primary plant design from concept through detailed design and construction support, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, practical, and technically robust engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of HV primary plant design for transmission and distribution substations.
- Take technical ownership of multiple design packages from concept through detailed design and construction support.
- Produce and review substation general arrangements, equipment layouts, elevations, and associated primary design deliverables.
- Specify and coordinate primary plant equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, and associated interfaces.
- Coordinate closely with civil, protection & control, commissioning, and construction teams to ensure fully integrated designs.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and design guidance to engineers across the team.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and technical risk assessments.
- Support client meetings and act as a trusted technical representative throughout project delivery.
- Assist with technical procurement activities including equipment specifications and vendor document reviews.
- Provide engineering support during installation, commissioning, and project completion where required.
- Drive continuous improvement across engineering processes, quality, and technical standards.

Ideal Background & Skills
- Experience delivering HV substation primary plant design, typically across 33kV-400kV projects.
- Strong knowledge of AIS and/or GIS substations.
- Experience producing and reviewing substation layouts and primary design deliverables.
- A solid understanding of electrical clearances, insulation coordination, earthing principles, and UK transmission design standards.
- Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, or acting as a lead engineer on complex projects.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the design lifecycle.
- Proficiency using AutoCAD, Bentley Substation, or similar design software.
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it) would be advantageous.
