About Us

As Lead Project Manager – Engineering & Design Management you are responsible for overseeing the delivery of engineering and design outputs by appointed FEED (Front End Engineering Design) consultants. Working as part of the Design and Construction team, and acting on behalf of the client, the role ensures that all design activities are effectively managed, compliant with National Grid standards, and aligned with project objectives, governance requirements, and stakeholder expectations.

This role does not undertake design activities directly, but leads the coordination and governance of externally delivered design.

You’ll also lead the way in ensuring health, safety and environmental standards are embedded at every stage, while delivering against regulatory obligations and meeting stakeholder and customer commitments. If you thrive in a delivery-focused environment and want to play a pivotal role in major infrastructure projects with long-term impact, this role offers the opportunity to really make a difference.

This role will support the delivery of the Weston Marsh to East Leicestershire Project and will be based across the East and West Midlands region. You will be expected to travel to 2-3 times a week operational and delivery sites and locations throughout your working week based on project demands. Operational or delivery roles requiring attendance at multiple sites within a region. Travel to our Birmingham project office.

About You

  • Demonstrable experience of leading cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrable experience of stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrable experience of good time management
  • Proficient business writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of problem-solving and an appetite for continuous improvement
  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills
  • A customer-centric approach to delivering a high-quality output
  • Proven track record in building strong, enduring and effective relationships with key stakeholders e.g. Government.
  • Good Project Management skills including management of risk for delivery of projects to scope, time, cost, quality, safety and security of supply
  • Engineering knowledge of HV systems (preferred) or other relevant field.
  • Knowledge of business processes and governance.
  • Working knowledge and application of CDM
  • Proficient understanding and experience of Safety and Environmental legislation, practices and policies.
  • Proficient in Contract Management (NEC)
  • Educated to a degree or equivalent level in related field or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience in delivering complex high-value projects
  • Full UK driving licence.

What You'll Do

Design Management & Assurance

  • Lead and manage FEED consultants on behalf of the Design and Construction team to ensure timely, high-quality design delivery in line with contractual requirements.
  • Working closely with internal design assurance functions to ensure that all engineering and design outputs comply with National Grid specifications, standards, and procedures.
  • Review and challenge design deliverables to ensure robustness, constructability, and alignment with
  • Oversee design risk management, ensuring risks are identified, mitigated, and tracked effectively.
  • Ensure design programmes are integrated with overall Design and Construction delivery schedules.

Governance & Compliance

  • Manage internal design governance processes within the Design and Construction team, including stage gate approvals and technical assurance reviews.
  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, technical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide clear reporting and documentation to support Design and Construction governance decision-making.

Interface Management

  • Lead interface coordination between the Design and Construction team and third-party stakeholders, including external asset owners and utility providers.
  • Manage dependencies and interactions between National Grid assets and external systems to ensure safe and compliant integration.
  • Facilitate technical agreements and resolutions across organizational boundaries.

Programme Integration & Delivery

  • Ensure design activities align with broader Design and Construction milestones, construction planning, and operational requirements.
  • Identify and resolve issues that could impact delivery timelines or quality.
  • Support the Design and Construction team in transitioning from design into subsequent project phases (e.g. procurement, construction).

What You'll Get

  • A competitive salary between £61,000 - £72,000 – dependent on capability.
  • This role also attracts a £4,500 market supplement which is pro-rated into monthly payments throughout the year.
  • As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
