Lead, HPC Engineer

One of Europe’s most exciting research organisations is on the hunt for a Lead engineer as part of their HPC team, who wants to be right at the heart of something meaningful. This is a place where big ideas, brilliant people and cutting-edge technology come together to tackle some of the most important questions. It’s collaborative, ambitious and refreshingly down to earth.

In this role, you’ll be the person who keeps the engines running. You’ll take ownership of high-performance compute and large-scale storage platforms, making sure they’re reliable, responsive and ready for whatever the scientists throw at them next. You’ll work closely with researchers and technology teams, oversee the HPC service desk, guide incident response when needed, and help shape the future direction of the platforms. You’ll also design and deliver training, support users, and step into a wider leadership role when required. It’s varied, hands-on and influential in all the right ways.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

They’re looking for someone who knows their way around HPC environments and large-scale storage, enjoys leading people as much as platforms, and communicates with clarity and warmth. You’ll be comfortable juggling priorities, working with different stakeholders, and finding practical solutions in a fast-moving research setting. If you’ve worked in science or biomedical research before, great. If not, curiosity and a collaborative mindset go a long way here.
