Lead Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Croydon | Salford | Sheffield | Southport | Glasgow (Hybrid) Salary: £62,109 (National) or £66,229 (Croydon) + Skills Allowance (up to £18,291, subject to assessment) Advert Closes: 2nd July 2026
About the Role
The Home Office handles 10 million emails per week, and this role sits at the core of ensuring secure, efficient, and compliant messaging infrastructure.
As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer and Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will:
- Lead and oversee messaging and hygiene services within M365 Purview, ensuring compliance with Government standards.
- Provide line management for a team of infrastructure engineers.
- Align with Technical Architects to deliver end-to-end architectural solutions across the service lifecycle.
- Translate technical designs into operational strategies and support integration with existing infrastructure.
- Lead infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with departmental policies and delivering continuous improvement through feedback loops.
You will be responsible for workforce planning, budget management, technology roadmaps, and day-to-day operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee third-party infrastructure services and proactively deliver operational expertise.
- Develop and maintain solutions that meet Home Office and Government compliance standards.
- Lead cross-functional teams to implement and enhance hybrid email (On-Premises/Online) infrastructure.
- Configure, customise, and optimise Exchange Online and legacy on-premises environments.
- Lead the adoption of mail hygiene solutions, including security, relay, connectors, and transport optimisation.
- Collaborate with compliance and cybersecurity teams to enhance email service integrity.
- Drive best practice adoption across Message Hygiene (HSIN), Information Technology Operations (ITOP), and Network Security (DESN).
- Healthcare planning for teams and ensure cost-effective, quality-driven service delivery.
- Continuously innovate with emerging technologies (e.g., AI, M365, Azure, Power Platform).

Essential Requirements & Skills
⭐ Technical Expertise:
- Experience managing enterprise email services (Exchange Online & on-premises) – proven track record of configuration, implementation, and cost-quality adherence.
- Expertise in email hygiene solutions (mailflow, connectors, security controls).
- Mail routing knowledge (relay, safety protocols, hybrid configurations).
- Extensive experience with systems integration and compliance documentation (e.g., GDPR, FDA, and technical standards).
- Demonstrated ability to lead technology adoption while maintaining architectural integrity.

- Ability to bridge technical teams (Email/IPM, Compliance, Cyber, and IT support).
