Lead Java Engineer – Banking

Contract:

Inside IR35

Working Pattern:

Hybrid – 2 days per week onsite

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Lead Java Engineer to join a major banking client. This is a hands-on technical leadership position, responsible for designing and delivering scalable Java-based applications while supporting and guiding the wider engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of enterprise Java applications.
  • Build scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Provide technical direction and support engineering best practices.
  • Review code and ensure high standards across security, testing and performance.
  • Design and integrate RESTful APIs and event-driven services.
  • Work closely with architects, product owners, and engineering teams.
  • Support cloud-native deployment and CI/CD processes.
  • Mentor developers and help resolve complex technical issues.
  • Deliver solutions in line with banking security and regulatory requirements.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Strong commercial experience with Java and Spring Boot.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Engineer or Senior Java Engineer.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices and distributed systems.
  • Experience with REST APIs and API-led integration.
  • Experience with Kafka or similar messaging technologies.
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Strong understanding of automated testing and code-quality practices.
  • Excellent stakeholder communication and technical leadership skills.
  • Banking or financial services experience is highly desirable.
