Lead LLC Development Engineer
About the Role
Wise Technical is seeking an experienced Lead LLC Development Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and delivery of PLC-based control software for automated baggage handling systems (BHS). This is a senior, hands-on technical leadership role responsible for setting technical standards, defining project structure, and ensuring high-quality controls development.
The successful candidate will:
- Own the technical delivery of PLC applications from design to commissioning.
- Ensure robust integration with HMI/SCADA platforms, Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) systems, and hold baggage screening infrastructure.
- Provide technical leadership to the larger LLC development team, collaborating with the LLC Product Manager and reporting to the LLC Solutions Senior Manager for line management.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Lead the architecture and design of large-scale PLC control applications for baggage handling systems, developed from initial concepts.
- Define coding standards, project structure, and best practices for the LLC development team, enforcing their consistent application.
- Provide technical mentorship and guide PLC engineers through code and design reviews to ensure quality, maintainability, and performance.
- Serve as the senior technical point of contact for PLC development, aligning with the LLC Product Manager to match development with product and project priorities.
PLC Development & Systems Integration
- Design and develop PLC software for:
- Conveyor control
- Bag tracking
- Sortation systems
- System sequencing (large-scale BHS installations).
- Develop control logic for hold baggage screening (HBS), adhering to regulations and operational standards.
- Establish and maintain interfaces with:
- Sort Allocation Computer (SAC)
- Host Level Controller (HLC)
- Airport IT/BRS and infrastructure systems.
- Architect and implement bag tracking logic, guaranteeing accurate, reliable, and auditable bag routing data.
- Integrate PLC applications with HMI and SCADA, ensuring real-time visualisation, alarming, and operator control.
- Design fault handling, diagnostics, and system recovery strategies.

Project & Delivery Management
- Produce and maintain:
- Functional design specifications
- Software design documents
- Test documentation for PLC applications.
- Lead FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) for control systems.
- Assist in on-site commissioning, including installation, testing, and site activation of PLC applications.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks early in collaboration with the LLC Product Manager and Senior Manager.
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Line-manage and/or lead junior/mid-level PLC engineers, fostering their development and performance.
- Liaise with mechanical, electrical, IT, and project engineering teams for seamless system delivery.
- Represent Wise Technical in technical discussions with clients, integrators, and screening equipment suppliers.
Essential Experience & Skills
Core Qualifications
- Proven ability to architect and develop large-scale PLC applications from scratch (not solely incremental improvements).
- Strong hands-on experience with major PLC platforms:
- Siemens S7/TIA Portal
- Rockwell/Allen-Bradley
- Equivalent industrial programming tools.
- Demonstrable experience writing PLC code for bag tracking in automated baggage handling systems.
- Experience integrating and coding for hold baggage screening (HBS) systems.
- Prior experience developing interfaces for Host Level Controllers (HLCs) and associated communication protocols.
- Experience integrating PLC systems with Sort Allocation Compatibility (SAC) platforms.

Technical Depth
- Solid understanding of HMI/SCADA design and integration (e.g., WinCC, FactoryTalk, Ignition).
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Industrial networking (Profinet, Ethernet/IP)
- OPC UA/TCP-IP communication protocols.
- Familiarity with functional design specifications and control philosophy documents.
- Leading or contributing to FAT/SAT activities and on-site commissioning.
Safety & Workforce Compliance
- Understanding of industrial safety systems and functional safety principles (e.g., safety PLCs, e-stop, interlock design).
- Education or equivalent credential:
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Computer Science, or a relevant field.
Location & Work Authorization
- Commitment to be based at Wise Technical’s LHR offices a minimum of 4 days per week.
- Right to work in the UK and eligibility to secure UK airside/airport security clearance.
Desirable Experience & Skills
Industry-Specific Advantage
- Prior experience within airport baggage handling (e.g., systems from BEUMER, Vanderlande, Siemens Logistics, Babcock Airports).
Technical Enhancements
- Exposure to baggage handling simulation tools or discrete event simulation of material management systems.
- Familiarity with airport-specific standards and regulations (e.g., ECAC, TSA-compliant frameworks).
Process & Leadership
- Experience with PLC codebase version control and software lifecycle management.
- Previous technical leadership roles (Principal Engineer, Team Lead).
Advanced Safety & Integration
- Recognised functional safety certification (e.g., TÜV Functional Safety Engineer).
- Knowledge of database/reporting integration for bag tracking and management systems.
