Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Title

Lead Design Engineer Location: Birmingham, West Midlands

Base Pay & Benefits

Role Overview

Join a growing design team, making a real impact by working on highly technical special purpose machinery. This role involves contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, and supporting bespoke projects from concept through to production and delivery. Due to expansion and increased demand, this position centralises on project management, innovation, and executing complex machinery design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of special purpose machinery projects.
  • Design machinery from inception to production and delivery, ensuring precision and efficiency.
  • Manage 2-3 concurrent projects while collaborating closely with production and procurement teams.
  • Create detailed mechanical designs using SolidWorks.
  • Support automation, robotic, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Integrate costing and manufacturing considerations into designs.
  • Embrace a hybrid work model, split between flexibility and site-based projects.

Requirements

  • Relevant experience with special purpose machinery design.
  • Strong mechanical engineering knowledge, including:
    • Pneumatics
    • Hydraulics
    • Automation
    • Robotics
    • Conveyor systems
  • Basic electrical understanding (specifically single-phase systems).
  • Expertise in fabrication and sheet metal design.
  • A background in food or packaging machinery highly desirable.
    • Desirable: SolidWorks experience.
  • Ability to commute to the Birmingham site.
