Lead Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Willingham
Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum
Working Pattern: Full-time, office-based
Hours: 35 hours per week
Contract: Permanent

A well-established engineering business with a strong reputation for developing and manufacturing specialist equipment is looking to appoint a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.
This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys seeing projects through from the initial idea to a finished product. You will be involved in the development of new equipment, solving complex mechanical problems and improving existing products, working closely with teams across the wider business.
You will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects and make a genuine contribution to the development of innovative engineering solutions supplied to customers internationally.
What You Will Be Doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing mechanical designs for complex equipment and assemblies.
- Taking projects from initial concepts through to detailed design, manufacture, and product launch.
- Creating 3D models, production drawings, and supporting technical documentation.
- Carrying out calculations, design checks, and tolerance assessments.
- Choosing suitable materials, components, and manufacturing methods.
- Working on prototypes and making design changes based on testing and performance results.
- Supporting the introduction of new products into production.
- Providing technical assistance to manufacturing, production, and service teams.
- Investigating faults and technical problems and developing effective solutions.
- Identifying opportunities to improve existing products, processes, and engineering standards.
- Working with suppliers and internal departments to ensure projects are delivered successfully.
- Supporting and mentoring less experienced members of the engineering team.

Project & Technical Ownership
You will be expected to take responsibility for your own projects and engineering work packages, ensuring work is delivered to the required standard and within agreed timescales. This will include:
- Planning engineering activities and managing priorities.
- Contributing to design and technical reviews.
- Identifying potential technical risks at an early stage.
- Presenting ideas and engineering solutions to internal stakeholders.
- Supporting verification, validation, and testing activities.
- Working with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, software, manufacturing, procurement, and production.
The Person
We are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer with a strong background in developing physical products or equipment. You will ideally have:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in mechanical product design and development.
- Strong experience using 3D CAD software, ideally SolidWorks or a similar system.
- A strong understanding of manufacturing methods, materials, and Design for Manufacture.
- Experience taking engineering projects from initial concept through to production.
- Experience with design calculations, tolerance analysis, and product verification.
- A structured and practical approach to solving engineering problems.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with people across different departments.
- The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a wider engineering team.
