Lead Plant Fitter – Aggregate and Asphalt Division
FM Conway is seeking an experienced Lead Plant Fitter to lead their brand-new asphalt manufacturing plant in Wellingborough. This is a full-time, permanent role with training, development, and long-term career progression opportunities.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled fitter or maintenance engineer looking to transition into a leadership position within a well-established infrastructure business.
Responsibilities
You will take a key role in:
- Leading mechanical maintenance activities to maximise plant uptime, reliability, and production efficiency.
- Ensuring highest standards of health, safety, and compliance.
- Establishing engineering standards, site performance, and overall operational success.
Leading a New Site
As FM Conway expands into the Midlands with their eighth asphalt plant in Wellingborough, the successful Lead Plant Fitter will:
- Join a brand-new team and help create the foundation for success from day one.
- Work alongside their existing Southeast sites during initial training and induction (2026–2027).
- By the time the new plant opens, they will be ready to lead from the outset as a pivotal member of the setup team.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintenance leadership – Plan and oversee preventative, reactive, and predictive maintenance to optimise plant uptime and efficiency.
- Technical expertise – Carry out fault-finding, repairs, and installation work across mechanical and electrical plant equipment.
- Team supervision – Supervise and support the engineering team and contractors, ensuring smooth operations.
- Safety & compliance – Enforce strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards, including LOTOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures.
- Record management – Maintain maintenance records, inspections, and contribute to CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems).
- Strategic liaison – Work with site teams to prioritise engineering requirements and enhance operational efficiency.
- Team development – Mentor apprentices and junior team members, fostering skills growth.

Requirements
FM Conway is looking for a polyvalent engineer with:
- 15+ years’ experience in asphalt, aggregates, or heavy industrial environments (mechanical/electrical maintenance).
- Proven leadership/supervisory experience in a similar engineering role.
- Strong technical skills, including fault-finding, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Solid health and safety knowledge and willingness to enforce procedures rigorously.
- A relevant engineering qualification (or equivalent experience).
- A full UK driving licence.
