Lead Principal Clinical Scientist (Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection)

Clinical Scientist (Diagnostic Physics & Radiation Protection) – Manchester

We are seeking a Clinical Scientist with expert-level knowledge & experience to join our growing team of ~33 scientists, technologists, and administrators in Diagnostic Physics & Radiation Protection.

About the Role

This role offers leadership opportunities, including:

  • IRR lead
  • Practice education lead
  • Super-trust expert lead in imaging modalities
  • Digital/A.I. or data lead The post holder may need to develop new skills to meet these commitments.

Key responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead scientific support & radiation protection services for diagnostic radiology in the North West region.
  • Provide radiation protection advice (as a Radiation Protection Adviser – RPA) and act as Medical Physics Expert – MPE to ensure NHS Trusts comply with statutory obligations.
  • Optimise and develop radiological techniques for improved patient safety and staff safety.
  • Manage the Diagnostic Reference Level Process (DRRPS) and the quality management system operation.
  • Provide expert support to The Christie’s radiotherapy centres (candidates with experience in MPE and RPA for radiotherapy will be particularly welcome).
  • Serve as a key subject expert in the CMPE RPA MPE Body, working with the Health and Safety Executive under IRR17 standards.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with radiographic and clinical teams to optimise diagnostic/interventional radiology.
  • Offer in-depth radiation regulations expertise and improve working practices through projects and initiatives.
  • Assess travel needs and ensure local regional support is evident.
  • Line manage and contribute to group management, including teaching and professional development encouragement.

Requirements

  • Essential experience in RPA (Radiation Protection Adviser) and MPE (Medical Physics Expert) support within our service region.
  • Candidates without full RPA or MPE experience will not be invited to interview.
  • If appointed below the person specification, a deferred development path will be created.
  • Proficient in regulatory compliance and radiation safety protocols.

The post is primarily based at The Christie, Manchester, but given the service spread across North West networks, there may be scope to situate within:

  • Greater Manchester
  • Lancashire
  • South Cumbria Integrated Care Systems.

  • Located 4 miles south of central Manchester (easy access to suburbs like Didsbury/Chorlton).
