Lead Project Engineer – Systems Engineering – Rail Applications

Job Title: Systems Engineering

About the Role

Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered around an iterative approach, mindset, and process that balances business and technical requirements to deliver quality products meeting user needs. This discipline ensures a robust system lifecycle by:

  • Defining and quantifying system requirements
  • Evaluating alternative design concepts
  • Conducting design trade studies
  • Selecting and implementing optimal solutions
  • Verifying system integration and execution

The role impacts functional projects, programs, and business organizations, influencing quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. It requires moderate autonomy and high operational judgment, aligning with professional practices and policies shaped by the position.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Component & Product Integration: Oversees activities spanning multiple components across products, ensuring optimal performance and operability.
  • System Requirements Management: Leads the definition, allocation, and flow-down of requirements across specifications for modules, components, or partners.
  • Verification & Validation: Drives system-level testing and validation to ensure the integrity of the final product or system.
  • Interface Management: Facilitates collaboration between component teams and execution organizations, defining clear interfaces.
  • Quality & Risk Trades: Mitigates risks and optimizes Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) metrics within cross-functional teams.
  • Configuration Control: Manages product configuration and maintains a robust control system.
  • Technical Expertise: Develops specialized knowledge and serves as a best-practice/quality resource, staying informed about advancements in the field.
  • Policy & Strategy: Contributes to strategy development and ensures alignment with organizational goals.
  • Cross-Functional Integration:leverages deep expertise to integrate with other functions; understands industry competition and market differentiators.
  • Decision-Making & Leadership:
    • Makes operational/decisions in engineering, technology, or product management.
    • Takes innovative perspectives on existing solutions.
    • Conducts data analysis to support recommendations.
    • Engages internal/external sources to inform decisions (limited external reach).
  • Mentorship: Acts as a knowledge-base for less experienced colleagues.
  • Project Leadership: Leads small-to-moderate risk projects, intersecting process, product, or organizational goals.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Communicates complex/sensitive information, fostering consensus-building within teams.
  • Influence & Persuasion: Develops persuasion skills to influence stakeholders on technical subjects.

Required Qualifications

Global Roles (excluding the USA): A qualification equivalent to a Master's degree in Engineering/Technology/Systems Engineering from an accredited university. Minor alternative: High school diploma + extensive relevant experience.

U.S.-Based Roles: A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in applicable disciplines (e.g., Engineering, Systems Engineering). Alternative: High school diploma/GED + 6+ years of applicable experience in influential position(s).
