Package: £62,210 – £75,000 (depending on suitability, qualifications, and experience).

We’re recruiting a Lead Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) within the Defence Radiation Protection Services (DRPS) team at AWE Alverstoke. DRPS provides initiating and non-ionising radiation protection services to the Ministry of Defence and commercial clients.
Key Role Purpose:
- Lead the DRPS RPA Body and oversee radiation protection for Defence and other external customers.
- Own Radiation Protection (RP) policies and procedures, driving improvements and innovation.
- Strategically lead radiation protection, health physics, and dosimetry services, ensuring they meet technical and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Strategically develop and enhance radiation protection, health physics, radiological metrology, and dosimetry practices across DRPS and Defence.
- Engage in national and international initiatives to advance radiation protection standards.
- Promote and communicate technical advancements in RP, metrology, and dosimetry—within DRPS and the wider profession.
- Provide leadership and oversight of the Radiation Protection Advice and Policy capability.
- Lead by example: Demonstrate positive behaviours, support organisational change, and foster teamwork.
- Maintain high ES&SQ (Environment, Safety, Health, Security, and Quality) standards.
- Undertake additional accountabilities (as defined under Chief Engineer Management Arrangements), including design and technical authority roles.

Requirements
We’re looking for candidates with:
- Experience in both leadership (technical and people-focused).
- Technical expertise in radiation protection, health physics, radiological metrology, or dosimetry.
- Strong communication skills (were able to engage diverse stakeholders).
- Commercial acumen—which includes a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Strategic thinking and strong leadership.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain security clearances (British citizenship + UK residency requirements apply, see below).
- Willingness to support an on-call emergency response(role when necessary.
Eligibility & Security Clearance
To apply for this role, you must be a UK citizen. For security clearance:
- Standard clearance (UK support) requires 5 years’ UK residency.
- Developed Vetting (DV) requires 10 years’ UK residency.
AWE will fund your security assessment—essential for this role.
