Speciality Lead – Cardiac, Urology & Laparoscopic

• Serve as the named clinical lead for Cardiac, Urological, and Laparoscopic services; maintain and develop speciality-specific instrument sets, implant inventories, and equipment requirements.
• Liaise with surgeons, suppliers, and representatives to ensure correct implant systems, specialist equipment, and laparoscopic stack configurations are available for each list.
• Lead scrub competency development and training for junior staff and students; contribute to service development and quality improvement within assigned specialties.

Leadership & Management

• Supervise and lead the scrub team day-to-day; support the Theatre Manager with staff deployment, rostering, and annual leave; deputise in their absence.
• Mentor junior practitioners, student ODPs, student nurses, and theatre support workers; contribute to appraisals and individual learning plans.
• Induct new staff and visiting clinicians to emergency equipment, scrub protocols, and operational procedures; model Welbeck values at all times.

Operational & Equipment

• Maintain scrub equipment, laparoscopic stacks, and specialist instrument sets; manage stock, raise orders, and coordinate planned preventative maintenance.
• Monitor usage and flag stock issues to the Theatre Manager; contribute to equipment replacement and capital planning as required.

The role will require multidisciplinary collaboration with consultants, all clinical and non-clinical teams, and Welbeck Oxford Senior Leadership Team. Daily interaction with patients and their relatives/carers.

What can you bring?

Essential Skills:

• Current registration with the HCPC as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) or with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (RGN) with scrub/perioperative experience
• Ongoing CPD in line with HCPC or NMC revalidation requirements, with a focus on scrub and perioperative practice
• Evidence of specialty training in Cardiac, Urological, and/or Laparoscopic scrub
• Minimum 3 years post-registration experience in a scrub role across multiple surgical specialties
• Previous senior or lead scrub role
• Experience working within a day-case theatre environment
• Experience mentoring or supervising junior scrub practitioners or students
• Comprehensive knowledge of surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and technique across all main surgical specialties
• Sound understanding of aseptic technique, IPC principles, and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist requirements
• Competent with electronic systems for incident reporting, equipment checks, and training records
• Demonstrates Welbeck values: patient-centred, professional, collaborative, and innovative
• Calm, confident, and decisive in the intraoperative environment and during unexpected events
• Able to lead and motivate a scrub team in a supportive and inclusive way
• Committed to advancing personal competence across all surgical specialties

• Proactive in identifying and escalating clinical risk within the theatre environment

Desirable Skills:

• Diploma or Degree in Operating Department Practice or Nursing (relevant to registration)
• Teaching, assessing, or practice supervisor qualification
• Leadership or management qualification (e.g. ILM Level 3 or equivalent)
• Demonstrable competence scrubbing for Cardiac, Urological and Laparoscopic surgery across a range of day-case procedures
• Experience in a private hospital or independent sector setting
• Expert knowledge of cardiac, urological, and laparoscopic instrument sets, implants, and equipment requirements
• Familiarity with CQC requirements and the professional standards of either the HCPC or NMC as relevant to perioperative practice
