Lead Software Engineer

Manchester - Hybrid (4 days onsite)

£75,000 - £90,000 + 10% Bonus

My client is a rapidly growing eCommerce business investing heavily in its technology platform and engineering capability. They're looking for a Lead Software Engineer to remain hands-on whilst taking ownership of technical direction and mentoring a small team of engineers.

You'll still be solving complex technical problems, designing architecture and writing production code. The difference is you'll also help shape engineering standards, coach developers and work closely with senior technology leadership as the business continues to scale.

If you're the engineer everyone turns to when things get difficult, but you've never wanted to become a full-time manager, this could be exactly the role you've been looking for.

The Opportunity

You'll become one of the senior technical voices within the engineering team, helping deliver a modern, scalable platform whilst supporting the growth of a team of four software engineers.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You'll still enjoy writing code and want to remain technically involved whilst taking on more responsibility.

Experience within Shopify or eCommerce would be ideal, although my client would also be keen to speak with engineers from high-volume digital platforms, retail technology or logistics environments.

You'll enjoy mentoring engineers, influencing technical direction and helping teams deliver great software without losing what made you an engineer in the first place.

What's On Offer

  • 10% annual bonus
  • Hybrid working (4 days onsite in Manchester)
  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
