About the Role
At Babcock, we create a safe and secure world—together. If you join us as a Lead Software Test Engineer at our Hawthorn, Corsham site, you’ll play a key role in delivering the New Management System (NMS), a project essential for operating satellites critical to British government communications.
This leadership position is responsible for:
- Overseeing the entire software development lifecycle (design, planning, execution, and assurance)
- Collaborating closely with Software Architects and Lead Software Engineers to meet tight deadlines
- Managing a team of software testing resources, ensuring timely delivery of work packages
- Designing, reviewing, and executing Test Plans and scripts (manual & automated)
- Defining testing processes and selecting appropriate tooling
- Analysing metrics to verify system performance and ensure scalability
- Documenting guidelines (e.g., Software Delivery Plan) for successful project completion
- Enhancing system design and implementing updates based on requirements
You’ll balance mentorship with hands-on execution while driving quality assurance for a high-impact national security application.
Responsibilities
- Define, lead, and supervise testing strategies across development phases
- Lead cross-functional discussions to align testing with technical and business requirements
- Train and guide junior test engineers in best practices (both manual and automated testing)
- Devise performance tests and stress scenarios for software reliability
- Implement continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD) practices where applicable
- Maintain test management tools, report discrepancies, and drive regression testing
- Ensure consistent, reproducible test results with robust documentation
- Act as a bridge between developers, testers, and stakeholders (e.g., project managers)
- Advise on improvement opportunities in test coverage, efficiency, and accuracy

Essential Experience
You must have:
- Hands-on experience with C# (cornerstone of the NMS stack)
- Proven experience leading a team (any size), leading peers in technical decisions
- Strong background in software testing methodologies, especially in agile/DevOps environments
- Ability to explain technical recommendations to non-technical stakeholders
