Lead Supportability Engineer
Lead Supportability Engineer – Permanent Hybrid Role
Salary Range: £59,400 - £75,000
Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. This range reflects the approved grade band for the role or a narrower hiring range, benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are governed by internal equity controls.
About the Role
Leonardo is seeking a Lead Supportability Engineer with strong industry experience across disciplines such as Electronics/Hardware, Systems, or related fields. The Supportability department plays a pivotal role in the end-to-end lifecycle of Leonardo’s programmes—from Bid to Development, Production, Customer Support, and eventual Disposal.

Your Impact
As the Lead Supportability Engineer, you will:
- Lead a team of Supportability Engineers, delivering diverse project work packages.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Operations, and Project Engineering, offering guidance on Supportability requirements, providing technical analysis, and shaping life-cycle strategies.
- Drive cross-department collaboration with Systems, Software, Test Equipment, Quality, and Industrial teams to align on design solutions, support strategies, and maintenance processes.
Responsibilities
Core Delivery Areas

Reliability Analysis
- Develop and implement component-to-system reliability models (utilising Reliability Block Diagram Methodology).
- Assess electronic, mechanical, and other systems for early-stage reliability guidance.

Reliability Testing & Simulation
- Design and conduct FEA, RGT, HALT, and ESS tests to identify failure modes.
- Create Reliability Growth plans and propose corrective actions.

Maintainability Analysis
- Conduct Human Factors & Maintenance Task Analysis to optimise Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) and scheduled maintenance schedules.

Testability Analysis
- Lead FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) with Hardware Engineers to wire BIT (Built-In Test) improvements.
- Feed insights back into the design process for fault-detection advancements.

Product Safety
- Collaborate with Safety & Systems Engineering to conduct hazard analysis (Intrinsic Safety, Environmental Impact Assessments).
- Contribute design safety inputs for Hazard Logs, Safety Cases, and Fault Tree Analyses.

Production & Support Strategy
- Analyse production-in-service failure data (FRACAS) to identify and mitigate recurring faults.
- Support with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action Plans via Integrated Project Teams (IPT).
- Develop In-Service Support Strategies using through-life cost modelling.
Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure timely delivery of milestones within budget and technical quality standards.
- Provide expert input during Life Cycle Management reviews.
- Collaborate with IPT to reduce cost and risk across the production lifecycle.
- Support Head of Department (HoD) with process improvements, changes to methodologies, and implementation of best practices.
- Schedule and chair Capital Project Cost Review Boards (PCRBs).
Requirements
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering or Sciences (or equivalent experience).
- Significant industry, aerospace/defence, or related experience.
- Experience in engineering leadership, preparing and managing complex work packages.
- Ability to balance conflicting priorities and make sound judgement calls.
We Are Looking For
- Team leadership experience with mentorship/coaching skills.
- Strong multi-disciplinary collaboration (particularly with Systems, Electronics, or Mechanical disciplines).
- Relevant knowledge in:
- Lifecycle analysis, Design for X approaches (e.g., DfR, DfM, DfT).
- Failure Modes & Effects Criticality Analysis (FMEA/FMECA).
- UK/International safety & maintainability standards.
- Familiarity with tools:
matlab, simulink, power bi, ptc windchill, matlab, matlab, matlab/simulink, power bi, jira, python, ms office, matlab(Note: Our ideal candidate will demonstrate adaptability and enthusiasm for learning new tools.)

Nice-to-Have ( Preferred Experience )
- Applied knowledge of Design for Supportability/DfR/DfT/DfL.
- Experience with testability, vibration, and environmental stress testing methodologies.
- Proven approach to cost-benefit lifecycle assessments.

- This role requires adherence to:
- UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS).
