Technical Applications Engineer (TAE) – UK Press Release
About the Role
Join Grid Automation and help accelerate the Green Energy transition. This Technical Applications Engineer (TAE) role will allow you to support Grid Automation’s customers across the UK and Nordics, delivering innovative substation protection and automation solutions—from design and manufacture to commissioning and maintenance.
Based in Stafford, UK, you’ll collaborate closely with commercial, technical, and operational teams to drive project successes, enhance customer relationships, and promote the Grid Automation portfolio across the North Europe (NEU) Region.
Essential Responsibilities

Technical Support & Problem-Solving
- Review, analyse, and resolve customer application enquiries using strong engineering principles, adhering to business standards, procedures, and deadlines.
- Provide technical support (both remote and in-person) to internal/external customers across Grid Automation’s portfolio.

Sales & Commercial Assistance
- Work with the commercial/sales team to propose, negotiate, and close tenders by ensuring the best technical solutions align with customer specifications.
- Promote the full Grid Automation portfolio in presentations, trade negotiations, and formal tenders.

Project & Operations Support
- Assist the Operations/Service Team in FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests), SATs (Site Acceptance Tests), and site commissioning.
- Conduct customer trainings on Grid Automation’s substation automation solutions.

Market Intelligence & Innovation
- Gather market intelligence and analyse competitor products to inform future dropmap development.
- Specify, homologate, and promote the Grid Automation portfolio with the commercial team.
- Represent General Electric Vernova (GE) at trade shows, seminars, and global conferences.

Technical Reporting & Knowledge Sharing
- Prepare technical papers to showcase the latest Grid Automation solutions.
- Train GE employees on the latest portfolio offerings.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
- Strong substation control (SCADA) knowledge.
- Advanced experience in a customer-facing engineering role.
- Working knowledge of:
- Substation protection & automation systems (RTUs, IEC 61850-based solutions, cybersecurity).
- Electric power industry trends, customer roadmaps, and competitor analysis.
- Problem-solving skills to analyse applications and produce compelling technical reports.
- Strong commercial acumen (basic financial awareness).
- Professional command of English (for written/verbal communication).
Desirable
- Experience with Grid Automation’s products (or similar market leaders).
- Substation environment experience (installation, testing, commissioning).
- Testing practices and equipment knowledge.
- Familiarity with:
- Substation protection/automation protocols (e.g., IEC 61850, HMI systems).
- Network protocols and software development (e.g., LabVIEW, SCADA platforms).
