We’re looking for a passionate Lead Transmission Engineer – OHL Design Quality to join our Asset Operations Team!
The Lead Transmission Engineer – OHL Design Quality provides senior asset owner leadership and technical authority across the Electricity Transmission Overhead Line portfolio. The role leads a national team of Transmission Engineers to ensure designs are safe, operable, maintainable, and compliant across the full asset lifecycle. The individual is accountable for embedding operation and maintenance requirements into optioneering and design throughout the project lifecycle, acting as the primary asset owner interface for OHL design quality. They mitigate risk, protect asset owner intent, and ensure the delivery of adoptable, standard-compliant outcomes.
Additionally, the role translates operational learning and asset expertise into consistent, high-quality design assurance and drives continuous improvement across the portfolio.
This is a Variable Base role. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!
What You'll Do
- Lead and influence the design of new and upgraded overhead line assets, shaping solutions from early concept through to delivery.
- Act as the key link between operations and project teams, ensuring designs are practical, maintainable and ready for real-world use.
- Set the standard for design quality, driving solutions that are safe, efficient and optimised for whole life performance.
- Provide expert challenge and make critical decisions to eliminate high risk or non-viable designs before they progress.
- Champion early engagement so operations are fully prepared for new assets, including maintenance strategies, training and support.
- Act as the technical authority on behalf of the Asset Owner when OHL defects arise within OHL projects.
- Use operational insight, defect trends and real asset performance to continuously improve future designs and engineering standards.
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of Transmission Engineers, within your area of discipline, building capability and ensuring strong technical leadership across OHL projects.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
