Head of Governance, Company Secretariat and Compliance

We are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly organised individual to provide strategic leadership across the Trust’s governance, company secretariat, compliance and executive support functions. This is a pivotal role, ensuring that the Trust Board, its committees, and all Academy Education Committees (AECs) operate effectively and meet all statutory and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on all aspects of the Trust’s governance and compliance infrastructure, overseeing:

    • Key frameworks, registers, filings, and reporting processes
    • Maintenance of the Scheme of Delegation, statutory registers, risk reporting, and governance cycles
    • Companies House requirements and wider policy schedule
    • Provision of clear direction to promotion of effective local governance and strong Trust-wide secretariat support
  • Line manage the Governance & Executive Support Officers, ensuring:

    • Consistency in governance practices across regional hubs (Wakefield (WF5) and Rotherham (S66))
  • Strategic governance leadership to strengthen accountability, transparency, and organisational effectiveness across Place Partnership

  • Oversee Trustee and Member recruitment, supervising the full governance lifecycle:

    • Supporting stakeholder fulfillment of responsibilities
    • Collaborating with Executive colleagues, Trustees, and Academy Leaders to align governance arrangements with best practice

  • Compliance assurance with key responsibilities including:

    • Managing the central complaints function
    • Coordinating with the Data Protection Officer on:
      • Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs)
      • Freedom of Information (FOI) requests
      • Data protection matters
    • Independent oversight of compliance effectiveness, including:
      • Service level agreements (SLAs)
      • Cross-functional agreements
      • Compliance reporting on Shared Services operations
  • Provide strategic executive support to the Chief Executive Officer:

    • Preparing briefings, papers and reports for Board meetings, external publications, and key stakeholder engagement
    • Acting as a trusted point of contact for:
      • Board Members
      • Trustees
      • External stakeholders
    • Serving as a first point of contact for the Trust via telephone and email on behalf of the Executive Team

Working Environment

  • Regular collaboration across distance-based hubs in Wakefield and Rotherham
  • Necessary coverage during term time plus inset and additional days (relevant availability in applications encouraged)

Requirements

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Be an experienced governance, company secretariat, or compliance professional with substantial experience in:

    • Education sector (preferable) OR similar complex organisational setting
  • Demonstrate:

    • High organisation and detail focus
    • Ability to manage complex governance cycles and competing priorities with accuracy
    • Credible advisory competence, providing:
      • Clear guidance and training on governance/compliance to senior leaders, Trustees, and Academy colleagues
    • Effective team leadership, ensuring:
      • Clear direction, professionalism, and consistent standards
    • Visible commitment to continuous improvement with a strong belief in:
      • Accountability
      • Transparency
      • Service quality

About the Organisation

Place Partnership merges Maltby Learning Trust and Accord Multi Academy Trust, both from South and West Yorkshire and established in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The merger supports:

  • Growth of academy families and educational impact scope
  • Enhancements to support more children and communities
  • Expanded brokerage in local education systems

From 1 September 2026, the combined Trust will comprise 12 academies, serving children and young people from early years to Post 16.
