Learning Disability Support Worker Waking Nights

Support Worker (Learning Disability Support) – Carlisle Mencap

We require a dynamic, caring, forward-thinking person to provide individualised, person-centred support to people with learning disabilities in our services.

You will work in partnership with individuals to enable them to take active control over their lives and make meaningful progress toward their personal goals. Your approach will be anti-discriminatory, ensuring the rights and entitlements of service users are always respected. Your role will focus on promoting self-esteem, independence, and social inclusion.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A proactive attitude with the flexibility to work independently and within a team

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop trusting relationships with service users to encourage them to express their needs, views, and concerns.
  • Support individuals to draw up care plans and person-centred plans, ensuring they reflect their needs, wishes, and aspirations while encouraging choice, independence, and inclusion.
  • Enable service users to be fully involved in managing their daily lives, including:
    • Cooking
    • Cleaning
    • Shopping
    • Washing
  • While fostering personal dignity and respect, provide personal care as required, including assistance with:
    • Bathing/dressing
    • Toilet use
    • Nutrition
    • (Following manual handling best practices)
  • Support individuals in meeting their cultural, spiritual, and identity needs.
  • Liaise with families and external agencies as necessary while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Implement care plans for safeguarding compliance in line with Carlisle Mencap’s policies, Cumbria’s Adult and Children’s Social Care guidance.
  • Administer medication safely where required.
  • Accompany service users to community facilities and facilitate participation in leisure activities and new experiences.
  • Champion the values and reputation of Carlisle Mencap through visible professional conduct and dedication.

Mandatory Training Requirements

Full participation in relevant training, beginning with the: Care Certificate (paid attendance) Opportunity for progression to RQF Level 2 Diploma in Adult Social Care.

Skills, Attitude & Attributes (Essential)

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to manage care records accurately.
  • Skills in guiding and developing everyday/ community skills, e.g.:
    • Cooking
    • Cleaning
    • Budgeting
    • Public transport use
  • Willingness to support individuals with financial management.
  • Approachable and open mindset.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings/walking nights/weeksends – working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Emotional resilience and adaptability to fast-paced, demand-driven care environments.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications

  • RQF Level 2 in Adult Care, or equivalent (e.g. Care Certificate) – appreciated but not mandatory for applicants.

Experience

  • Previous experience supporting individuals with learning disabilities in residential or community settings.
  • Informal awareness of Makaton sign language or other BSL variations.
  • Full driver’s licence (asset for supporting mobility assistance).
  • Familiarity with local community resources (Preferred).

Additional Attributes

  • Passionate interest in an array of activities such as:
    • Swimming
    • Art and craftwork
    • Fell walking/hiking
    • Sport (e.g. football, gym)
    • Theatre, photography, or reading – to support varied engagement with service users.
