Job Title: Learning Mentor (SEND Support)

Job Details

  • Job Type: Temporary
  • Location: Schools across Somerset
  • Pay: £88–£98 per day (depending on experience)
  • Daily Rate: £89.66 per day (potential for higher pay based on experience, including holiday pay)
  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Start Date: Wednesday, 6th August 2025 (subject to selection)

About the Role

Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning? Do you thrive in supportive, emotionally fulfilling environments?

We are recruiting Learning Mentors to work across specialist schools and SEND units within mainstream schools across Somerset.

As a Learning Mentor, you’ll play a critical role in supporting students with:

  • Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.
  • Academic, emotional, and social progression.

You’ll collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to implement individual support plans under Students’ Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).


Key Responsibilities

  • Support at-risk students who may disengage from learning.
  • Work one-to-one and with small groups to boost motivation, confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Foster social and resilience skills through structured activities.
  • Monitor progress and liaise with:
    • Teaching staff
    • SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators)
    • Pastoral support teams
  • Act as a trusted, encouraging adult, promoting positive behaviour.
  • Assist students with academic, emotional, and social needs in line with their Educational Health & Care Plans (EHCPs).

Experience Requirements

  • Desirable (but not essential) – prior experience in education, youth work, coaching, support work, mental health, or safeguarding is advantageous.
  • Full onsite training provided – no prior qualification required.

Work Availability:

  • Full-time preferred, flexible arrangements (including part-time) may be discussed.

    • Reference checks
    • Trained Adult Reference (TRA) checks
    • DBS (Criminal Record Check)
  • Face-to-face interviews required for all applicants.
  • Children and Families Recruitment Policy fully applied.

DBS Clarification:

If you hold a non-voluntary DBS certificate, it must be updated. If not, we’ll process a new check at a cost of £62.70, endorsed by UKGC Criteria, reimbursed post-employment with personal DBS on the Update Service after completing 20+ days working.
