The role is within the Vale of Glamorgan Hearing Support Service, part of the Wellbeing and ALN Directorate. The job is based at the Hearing Resource Base at St Cyres Comprehensive School, Penarth, within an energetic and supportive team passionate about the education of deaf young people.

Key Details

  • Pay: Grade 5, Spinal Points 8-12, £26,824 – £28,598 per annum (pro rata £13.90 – £14.82 per hour)
  • Hours: 30 hours per week, 5 days
  • Location: Vale of Glamorgan Hearing Resource Base, St Cyres Comprehensive School, Penarth

Description

The role involves supporting pupils with hearing loss to:

  • Access the curriculum through varied communication approaches
  • Fully engage in all aspects of school life

Daily responsibilities include:

  • In-class 1-to-1 or small-group support
  • Work within the Resource Base

The pupils are enthusiastic, motivated, and a delight to work with. Successful candidates will support students from Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.

Additional requirements may include:

  • Assisting the Hearing Support team with outreach work in Vale of Glamorgan schools, as directed.

About You

Essential Requirements

  • Understanding of educational and social needs of pupils with:
    • Hearing loss
    • Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
    • Effects of hearing loss on learning
  • Recent experience working with children in a secondary school setting
  • Ability to support pupils with hearing loss across all curriculum areas
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to:
    • Work independently with initiative
    • Operate effectively as part of a team
  • Strong organisation skills
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to promote pupils’ independent learning
  • Minimum GCSE grade ‘C’ or above in:
    • English
    • Mathematics
  • Preparedness to undertake relevant training as required
  • BSL Level 2 or above (or commitment to attain this independently)
  • Willingness to carry out outreach work under the direction of a Teacher of the Deaf, when required.
