Learning Support Assistant – Part-Time (SEND Department)

Harrogate College is seeking a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join their Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Department.
About the Role
The SEND Department is a small team of professionals dedicated to supporting students with a wide range of needs across our learning programmes. Responsive duties include:
- Providing in-class scaffolding and mentoring to ease academic and psychosocial challenges of college life
- Coordinating referrals for external assessments (including exams access arrangements)
- Ensuring full inclusion of learners, particularly those with Educational, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
- Collaborating closely with teaching staff and industry partners
The role enables high impact on students’ vocational development and life skills. Harrogate College has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence in SEND by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) through the Luminate Education Group.
Key details:
- Hours: 22.5 per week over 3 days, 39 weeks per year
- Salary: £14,298 per annum (pro-rata)
Responsibilities
- Student Support:
- Offer bespoke learning support in-class and during breaks
- Assist with specialist care requirements, including mobility support for wheelchair-users
- Facilitate personal and medical needs where required

Reporting & Advocacy:
- Provide regular oral and written progress updates (details on EHCP targets)
- Compile feedback for teaching team and attend annual reviews/meetings

SEND Coordination:
- Advocate for strategies to overcome individual barriers
- Align education to ** Vorbereitung auf Erwachsenenleben** (Preparation for Adulthood concept)
Essential Requirements
- Qualification: Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy achieved or commitment to completion within one year
- Awareness: Understanding of SEND needs in further education contexts
Desirable Criteria
- Qualification: Level 2 Award for Learning Support Practitioners** (or willingness to study within one year)
- Applicable Background: Proven experience supporting students with high needs (akin to SEN support as frequently encountered)
- Policy Knowledge: Familiarity with transition planning and Skills for Adulthood (Compulsory Entitlements)
