Lecturer in 3D Character Art – Games Academy, Falmouth University

About the Role
You will be part of an esteemed team of teachers, researchers, and practitioners passionate about advancing the field of 3D character art and game development. Based on our vibrant Penryn campus, this role allows you to:
- Teach and mentor students enrolled in varied modules, shaping the next generation of game-ready assets and creative professionals.
- Develop teaching materials and lead students through an industry-standard pipeline, preparing them for careers in Game Design, Game Art, Programming, and allied industries.
- Support the Games Academy’s mission to produce top-quality students and foster world-class research, reinforcing links between academia, innovation, and industry.
- Collaborate with a diverse team of specialists, contributing to a dynamic, inclusive, and collaborative creative environment.
With flexible autonomy, you will define teaching methods aligned with real-world industry trends, ensuring students thrive in today’s fast-evolving gaming landscape.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality lectures and seminars in 3D character art, covering tools such as ZBrush, Maya, and Substance.
- Mentor students across multiple modules, developing their skills from foundational techniques to industry-ready workflows.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Game Design, Programming, Animation, and beyond to create cohesive, epic projects.
- Maintain current industry standards, including an understanding of evolving trends in games and interactive media.
- Obtain and share best-practice feedback to enhance the student experience and Learning and Teaching (L&T) outcomes within the Games Academy.
- Create and update teaching resources tailored to a variety of learning styles.
- Ensure equity, diversity, and inclusive practice are embedded in your teaching strategies and course content.
- Actively contribute to research, engagement, and innovation within the Games development field.

Requirements
Your experience and qualifications should include:
Professional Experience & Expertise
- Proven track record in 3D character art:
- Proficiency in ZBrush, Maya, and Substance, with an ability to apply these tools effectively in a pipeline environment.
- Evidence of high-quality character models—portfolio and/or work samples demonstrating strong technical and artistic skill.
- Deep understanding of industry norms and emerging trends, particularly within games and entertainment, to ensure teaching remains relevant and forward-thinking.
Collaborative & Pedagogical Skills
- Experience teaching at a higher education level, preferably within creative industries disciplines.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts for diverse audiences.
- Comfort working with cross-disciplinary teams, and willingness to collaborate with programmers, animators, designers, and writers.
- Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and fostering a welcoming academic environment.
- Initiative to develop and evolve content, methodologies, and ongoing assessment within the module(s) you lead.
