Lecturer in Farm Animal Practice Grade UE08: £50,253 – £61,759 per annum Full-time, 35 hours per week (Open-ended contract, including 1 in 6 on-call rota)


About the Role

At the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, we are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced farm clinician to join our f Farm Animal Practice team as a Lecturer in Farm Animal Practice. This role is based at a world-class veterinary institution focused on teaching, clinical practice, and research.

The Farm Animal Practice offers:

  • First-opinion care for farms (primarily beef, sheep, dairy, camelids, pigs, and smallholdings)
  • Consultancy and referral work, with access to advanced diagnostic tools and surgical facilities
  • A dedicated Farm Animal Hospital for undergraduate teaching, including:
    • Isolated hospitalisation for referral cases
    • Mobile hydraulic foot-trimming crush
    • Transportation equipment: 3 Easiscans, 1 Sector scanner, and portable digital X-ray
    • In-house post-mortem services and clinical/biochemical laboratories
    • Bull/ram testing facilities

As an approved institution for ECBHM (European College of Bovine Health & Management) and ECSRHM (European College of Small Ruminant Health & Management) residency programmes, we provide opportunities for fellowship and training.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and developing the Farm Animal Practice and Hospital
  • Delivering vet services to clients while ensuring top-notch clinical care
  • Teaching undergraduate students in farm animal medicine, husbandry, and disease management
  • Collaborating on consultancy, referral cases, and clinical research in farm animal practice

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical veterinary services to local farms and clients
  • Teach and supervise undergraduate veterinary students in farm animal topics
  • Help plan and deliver farm animal clinical services and educational programs
  • Engage in consultancy and referral cases, ensuring high-quality care
  • Support the clinical research program within the section, helping to generate scholarly output
  • Ensure satisfactory animal welfare standards in all clinical operations
  • Assist with post-mortems and laboratory-based diagnostics
  • Contribute to workplace safety and Official Veterinary obligations

Skills & Attributes Required

  • Essential:

    • Registered Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS)
    • Significant farm animal clinical experience (practice, fieldwork, or industry)
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and students
    • Full unrestricted UK driving licence (Due to frequent travel in adverse weather)
    • Satisfactory Level 2 DBS Check (required before commencing employment)
  • Advantageous but not mandatory:

    • Postgraduate qualifications (e.g., MSc, PhD, or residency training) in relevant fields
    • Recognition as an Official Veterinarian (or eligibility upon confirmation)
    • Personal client-facing experience in farm settings
