Lecturer in Food and Human Nutrition – Permanent
Salary: £47,389.00 - £56,535.00 per annum
About the Role

The School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences within Newcastle University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences is seeking a passionate and committed Lecturer in Food and Human Nutrition on a permanent basis.
The School is a dynamic and supportive community specialising in areas such as nutrition and dietetics, sport and exercise science, and biomedical sciences. Over the past few years, the School has expanded significantly, with over £57 million invested in teaching and laboratory facilities, including the Dame Margaret Barbour Building and Sports Centre.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching and learning activities for:
- AfN-accredited BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition
- BSc (Hons) Nutrition with Food Marketing
- Other UG (undergraduate) and PG (postgraduate) degree programmes within the School
- Mark assessments, supervise UG and PG projects, provide pastoral support, and participate in the administrative aspects of degree programmes
Research
- Make a significant academic and research contribution to the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre
- Focus on research strength areas, such as:
- Nutrition and metabolic disease
- Brain health and brain ageing
- Childhood nutrition
- Nutrition and cancer
Sustainability
The School is committed to sustainable practices, inviting participation in initiatives like:

Key Accountabilities
Teaching & Learning
- Provide high-quality teaching, learning, and student support
- Mentor and advise students throughout their studies
- Design, deliver, and assess modules adhering to University standards
- Develop the curriculum, ensuring students benefit from research-intensive teaching
- Promote education for life, engaging students and supporting their long-term success
Research
- Conduct internationally excellent research in Food and Human Nutrition
- Contribute to the School’s research profile, publishing high-quality outputs
- Secure external funding for research initiatives
- Demonstrate impact, solving real-world problems and engaging with stakeholders
- Supervise postgraduate research (PGR) students
Other
- Advance the University’s Vision, Mission, and Strategy
- Actively contribute to teamwork within the School and Research Centre
- Commit to equality, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability
- Support national/international academic development
- Hold ** managerial or administrative roles** as needed (e.g., Module Leader, Degree Programme Director)
- Participate in wider School, Faculty, and University committees
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Proven experience delivering research-led teaching in nutritional sciences, integrating technology effectively
- Demonstrated ability to secure research funding
- Strong track record of international, high-quality research publications
- Experience engaging with external stakeholders and demonstrating research impact
- International research profile, evidenced by publishing, professional engagement, or awards
- Experience supervising PGR students and negotiating UG/PG research projects

Degrees
- Good Honours degree (or equivalent) in Food and Human Nutrition or a related discipline
- PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
- Relevant Professional Body Membership (optional but desirable)
- Postgraduate teaching qualification/Advance HE Fellowship (desirable)
