Lecturer in General Building – Construction & Engineering

Location: Lancaster Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week Salary: Up to £44,300 per annum (including Shortage Skills Allowance) Reference: SE4212 Closing date: 15th July 2026


About the Role

Are you an experienced industry professional looking for a new challenge?

Do you have a passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation in construction and engineering? This unique opportunity exists in our state-of-the-art Construction Centre at Lancaster & Morecambe College.

We are seeking qualified industry professionals with up-to-date hands-on experience in general building trades. This role is ideal for those who do not yet hold a teaching qualification but are enthusiastic about developing young professionals, have strong communication skills, and display teaching potential.

At Lancaster & Morecambe College, we believe in supporting career changers! You will have:

  • A comprehensive on-the-job training programme, including initial teacher training (e.g., PGCE Pathway into Teaching or equivalent).
  • Individual support and mentoring to help you transition smoothly into your teaching role.
  • A reduced teaching workload in your first year if required.
  • A structured introduction to the teaching profession in a nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deliver, and assess industry-aligned construction and engineering programmes at further education level.
  • Provide objective vocational expertise and industry-specific experience to learners.
  • Support and guide learners in practical skills, technical knowledge, and employability through:
    • Hands-on workshops
    • Mock assessments and apprentice-style training
    • Participation in industry visits and guest speaker sessions
  • Collaborate with college lecturers, industry partners, and subject coordinators to:
    • Develop bespoke curricula
    • Ensure courses meet modern apprenticeships and employer demands
    • Achieve high-level student outcomes
  • Mentor learners in areas like health and safety, workplace protocols, and technical project management.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on construction industry standards and technologies.
  • Assist in the management of the College’s state-of-the-art construction facilities.

Requirements & Qualification

Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria for eligibility:

  • Professionally qualified in general building trades (e.g., bricklaying, plastering, joinery, roofing, or utilities repairs) with minimum 3 years’ post-qualification industry experience.
  • Technical collateral experience (e.g., inspection, supervision, site management roles) and a willingness to develop academic teaching skills.
  • Career progression in the sector showing insight into learner development.
  • Commitment to improving education in trades and a passion for inspiring young professionals.

Non-negotiable:

  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for working with vulnerable adults/young learners.
  • An honest and inspiring demeanour with strong communication skills.
  • Willingness to participate in further training in safeguarding (as outlined in our policy and job description).

Applicants without prior teaching qualifications will be enrolled in an accredited programme full or partial funding for your initial teacher training.
