Lecturers in Law (Teaching & Research; Grade F) – Newcastle University

Salary: £41,064 per annum

About the Role

Newcastle Law School invites applications for two Lecturers in Law (Teaching & Research; Grade F). As part of a Research Group university, we champion inclusive values: Challenge • Social Justice • Compassion • Wellbeing • Excellence • Responsibility • Respect.

We seek passionate educators and researchers who can demonstrate an emerging national/international research profile and a clear research trajectory. Your work should engage with socially relevant legal issues, addressing real-world challenges through original, rigorous inquiry.

Key Teaching Areas

Preference is given to candidates able to contribute to teaching in one or more of the following specialisms:

  • Contract Law
  • Land Law
  • Equity
  • Tort Law
  • UK & EU Law (broad legal systems) or
  • Family Law
  • Law of Evidence
  • Criminology/Criminal Justice (for the planned Law with Criminology LLB programme development).

Applicants whose research interests align with their teaching expertise will be prioritised.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver high-quality research-led teaching
  • Support and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations
  • Act as an academic advisor, guiding students throughout their studies
  • Set and mark assessments in line with university standards, integrating digital learning tools

Research

  • Conduct internationally excellent research (high potential for REF 3 or 4* classification)
  • Engage with Newcastle Law School’s research communities and/or NUCoREs (Newcastle University’s Centres of Research Excellence)
  • Pursue external funding where feasible
  • Demonstrate impact by addressing real-world problems via research-based solutions and external stakeholder collaboration
  • Supervise PGR (PhD) students (where experience allows)

Other Responsibilities

  • Act as an active citizen of Newcastle Law School
  • Contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research and educational culture
  • Manage administrative tasks supporting teaching, research, engagement, and student experience
  • Attain a citizenship role within the school community

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Evidence of a developing national/international research profile (or high potential)
  • Ability to teach foundational legal subjects relevant to the Law School’s curriculum (e.g., Contract Law, Land Law, Tort, Equity, UK/EU) or Specialised expertise in Family, Evidence, or Criminology-related modules
  • Commitment to outstanding student engagement through research-informed teaching
  • Experience supervising undergraduate/graduated research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in academic communities

Desirable Qualifications

  • A good Honours degree in Law
  • PhD (nearly completed or submitted within 3 months of application)
  • Professional Body Membership (where applicable to subject area)
  • Higher Education (HE) teaching qualification
