At Sandwell College, we believe that Maths opens doors. We’re seeking a passionate and inspiring Lecturer in Maths (Functional Skills) to join our team on a fixed-term maternity cover contract.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to transform learners' lives by helping them develop the mathematical skills, confidence, and resilience needed for further study, employment, and daily life. Whether you’re an experienced FE practitioner or a dedicated educator looking to advance your career, you’ll join a supportive, forward-thinking team focused on outstanding teaching and learning.
As a Lecturer, your responsibilities will include:
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging and innovative Functional Skills Maths lessons for learners from Entry Level to Level 1, adapting approaches to support diverse needs.
- Create schemes of work, learning resources, and assessments that enhance learner engagement and success.
- Leverage digital technologies and experimental teaching methods to enrich the learning experience.
- Monitor learner progress, provide timely feedback, and guide students toward their goals.
- Act as a personal tutor, offering academic, emotional, and pastoral support.
- Support examination processes in compliance with awarding body and JCQ policies.
- Maintain accurate learner records and contribute to quality assurance and curriculum development.
- Collaborate with colleagues and external partners to enhance curriculum excellence and learners’ outcomes.
- Participate in team meetings, curriculum planning, and standardisation activities.
- Work up to two evenings a week as required.

Requirements
We’re looking for an enthusiastic educator who thrives in inspiring learners and making maths accessible and exciting. Ideally, you’ll hold:
Qualifications & Experience
✔ A degree in Mathematics or a related field. ✔ A qualifying teaching credential, including: - Certificate in Education (CertEd) or Level 5 teaching qualification. - Recognised accolades like DTTLS, PGCE, DET, or equivalent (for Qualified Lecturer banding, £31,837–£48,160).
Not sufficient on their own:
- PTLLS, CTLLS, or CEITA assessors (you may qualify under Unqualified Lecturer banding, £26,661–£29,998).
✔ Experience in teaching and assessing Functional Skills Maths within Further Education, particularly for** Entry Level to Level 1** learners.
✔ Deep knowledge of assessment practices and quality assurance.
✔ A proven ability to generate inclusive learning experiences, catering to diverse groups (including ESOL learners).
